Drying Socks?

When you're outside and your leather boots and wool socks get wet and the temperature is around 40 degrees- what's the best way to dry your socks? Take your boots off, leave your socks on or take them off? the situation would be out in the woods, but you can sit for a while until they are dry enough to move on.

Cushion soles, OD green. I want you boys to change every time we stop.

Won't go into the woods for long periods of time without an extra pair of socks.

I have found Gore-Tex to last only a couple years before it cracks and lets water through. This is based on three pairs of Danner boots. Anymore, I just go with Russells, properly treated. I'm thinking that the best way is to have a clean pair of socks in the pack, then at the hallway point, changing them out and if it isn't raining, tie them outside the pack for "airing".

Don't put them TOO close to the fire. My Daughter does lots of knitting and says much of today's wool yarn has other "stuff" in it which will be damaged by too much heat.
The Grouch Attack ruined a whole dryer load of my regular socks last week by setting the dryer to "torch". Every darned sock now has no stretch-it's like putting on a sack.

Carry a spare pair or 2 in a ziplock bag in your pack.

I might add that wet wool socks are not warming if left on wet.

put the wet ones inside your outer layer and your body to let your body heat to dry them

I've had my hunting pair of Danners for 23 years and they are still waterproof. Are you cleaning them and treating them with mink oil regularly? They have had very heavy use also.

I always keep spare socks personally.
