I drove 16 hours yesterday and got up early this morning. I am dead tired. 4 Days ago a former tenant who is in aviation calls me and ask if I would be interested in an airplane. A 1977 Piper Archer with low low hours and one former owner. It is out of state, and he delivered an aircraft to the vicinity and went by to see the owner of the Archer. He had deceased. The plane is for sale and I mean for sale, real real reasonable. He is out in the area in another week out west and could fly her home for me.

I have been looking for a good deal on a small plane for quite some time now. I found a bargin in Texas but it was out of Annual. I found a pilot with a license to fly it back even though of its status. Problem was it only had about 60 flight hours left on the engine. They must be rebuilt by a certified aircraft engine rebuilder at a cost of about $10k. There are a few ways around spending that kind of cost on the rebuild but it really seemed like a real pain in the * to me so I passed on it. But then I found out that a plane can be rented in our area for about $75 per flight hour plus fuel. Its hard to justify the cost of maintaining your own plane when one can be rented so cheaply. Hell, the hanger storage fees at my local airport are around $125 a month. A wise old man once told me: "Remember the three F's. If it Flies, Floats, or Fornicates, its cheaper to rent then own". I took that as sound advice.

I don't like you anymore than anyone else around here, but an airplane is a completely different world. If something goes wrong you can't just pull over and fix it. They are very expensive to operate, and maintainace is constant. If you are going to buy this aircraft I would suggest renting a hanger and keeping it there until you get a private pilot certificate, instrument flight rule, a commercial certificate, and take a basic course in airframe and powerplant maintainance. IFR and commercial certificate will greatly reduce your insurance rate, and the maintainace course will give you more insight into your aircraft and let you discover potential problems before they become a problem. I honestly believe that the private pilot certificate is not enough training or experience to safely operate an aircraft.

I owned a C-182K for over Ten Years, and flew it lotsa places, lotsa hours. Was great fun while I was Working, as it turned "Around Town" Three-Day Weekends into Real Interesting Cross-Country Fun!

Turned Long Weekends into Real Vacations. Allowed us to really cover the ground. We calculated that if we had to drive over Three Hours to get anywhere, it was much better to fly, weather permitting.

Time is at Such a Premium when you are working for a Living...Private Plane Ownership can be a real enabler, IF you are on the Ball, If You believe that Physics Laws actually apply to you 100% of the time, and if you can be a "Cool Head" when things go askew, as They Always Do.

It was The Absolute Best pursuit I ever endeavored to undertake. Most Challenging and Most Rewarding. I miss it like a Leg or Hand.

Buuut, I calculated my costs, and with a Partner in the Plane who only flew it Two or Three times a Year, for a total of about Two hours, but shared Half the Hangar, Half the Insurance, and Half the Maintenance (Ideal Partner!), My costs approached $100/Hour, all up, From Purchase till Sale. If I had Unlimited Shekels, I would have me a Cessna 208, on Amphib Wiplines, Painted in Winnebago Colors, and would have the interior converted into a Four-Person Luxo-Camper, and would live in the thing Half the Year!

Alas, I had to bid My Bird Goodbye a few years back.

    Great memories, though!
