How far can you span with a main T without a hanger. I want them two foot OC, holding tile, spanning 4'6". The cross T's will be 2' OC, also supporting tile. This is in a 9' wide room with al 2x2 going longways, thus the 4'6" span. Can't hook into the ceiling with a hanger, no way. Thanks!

Run your mains @ 4'6" and place them parallel to a 4'6" wall starting at 1'6" from that wall. Place two more @ 2' centers and that will bring you to 1'6" from the other 4'6" wall, that's 3 full tiles and 2 trimmed tiles. When you place the mains, put the notches for the cross tees 1' on either side of center on the 4'6" wall, that's 1 full tile down the middle and a 1'3" cut on either side. It wastes a little tile but it will look much better if you have equal sized borders. Mains should be supported every 4' but a 6" "cheat" will be fine. Also, they make ceiling tile that are very light weight (usually insulating fiberglass with a vinyl facing) that won't put any strain on your grid.
    Hope this helps
