Gun refurbish

Buddy of mine found a TC flintlock that someone took a SOS pad to. Messed up the finnish, wood, and brass. Scratches all over the poor once beautifull brass.

Can anyone give me some tips to polish the brass back up? Not sure what to use to take the scratches out.

If the brass parts are solid brass, should not be any different than polishing any metal. A soft buffing wheel with a very mild metal polish should take care of it. Tread lightly, and if you can, practice your technique on some brass scrap....

Buffing wheel and rouge, but absent that, on the brass you can do a decent job with Brasso, towel, and a LOT of elbow grease.

Funny, I'd expect you to have said Blitz Cloth.
If scratches in the brass are deep you need to buff them out with an abrasive buffing compound and cloth wheel.

If you have a finnish problem, try a Swede or a Norwegian.

Good advice but if the scratches are too deep to polish out, Start with 320 wet or dry sandpaper and keep goint to finer paper till you get to 600. Then polish as previously recomended.

And is you want a super-fine polish, use lambs tallow last. Many, many years ago, we used that stuff on the lifter bases of injector pumps. Takes forever but makes for a mirror finish!

I think you may have to get the barrel re-blued.

Definately will redo the finnish on the barrel, but I'm going to use the old fashioned browned finnish instead of blueing.

What is the downside to putting a metal lacquer over the brass to hold the finnish better?

If you intend to use chemical brown rather than rust brown try Mark Lee Express Brown. I've yet to get even results with Birchwood Casey.

Took me a few minutes to find it.
