We all know Commando is the greatest action movie of all time. Bar none, discussion over. In fact, it might be the greatest movie ever, come to think of it. Scratch that. It IS the greatest movie ever.
But what is the greatest action movie of all time outside of Commando? I know, I shudder to imagine a world where Commando doesn't exist either, but it's only a hypothetical, so calm down.
I say Predator. A buddy says Die Hard (the first one.) What say you?
The judging criteria is based on the following:
Action
Body count
quantity and quality of one-liners
body count
explosions
gear-up scene
gun fu
final fight scene
body count
plot (such as it is)
body count
etc.
Western movies don't count. They have their own genre. Horror movies are out too, as are action movies that are too heavy on the sci-fi like the Alien franchise. Cop and vigilante/revenge movies are in.
we've tabled the discussion until friday pending the input of this forum.

I would say Die Hard is easily number 2 because its so damned clever.
The Rambo franchise would be in the top 5 somewhere.
rambo-v had a excellent body count
Or, does * count?
rambo-v had a excellent body count
Will agree about the body count there.
Die Hard is getting the popular vote.
However, the best movie ever made was obviously Sand Pebbles.
Action- Guns, Chinese black magic, Kung Fu...the only thing it didn't have was ZOMBIES and Lo-pan was close
Body count- are you kidding??? They dropped like flies. Some got eaten by monsters
quantity and quality of one liners- again, are you kidding??? The entire movie is a good one-liner. I say so. Jack Burton. Me.
body count- A GUY EXPLODED HIMSELF
explosions- A GUY EXPLODED HIMSELF
gear up scene- they drank a potion that was almost as good as a six demon bag! They could do things nobody else could do and see things nobody else could see!
Final fight scene- Lo-pan and the Sorms die. Jack Burton's reflexes win the day. A GUY EXPLODES HIMSELF
gun-fu- A kung-fu gangster has pearl-handled .45s in cowboy holsters on both hips!
body count- they were in the hell of upside down sinners!!!
plot- Jack wants his money! Triple or nothing. Oh, and they rescue Mau Yin, etc etc
body count- A GUY EXPLODES HIMSELF!
etc- You were not put on this earth to 'get it', Mr Burton!
Actually, SCREW Commando. Big Trouble kicks Commando's pansy *!
If body count is one of the criteria, Fail Safe would be hard to beat. They killed pretty much everybody on earth, and Slim Pickens rode a bomb to the ground.
However, the best movie ever made was obviously Sand Pebbles.
[;)]Failsafe was the movie that Dr Strangelove parodied. Pickens was in Dr Strangelove

Yup.
Alien (the first one) is believeably scary, but, I wouldn't call it an action movie.
I'd give it two thumbs up.
the lobby scene in matrix (all that automatic fire tearing up the granite and people doing kart wheels while firing.....) is the best single scene, bar none!
I'm also a big fan of How the Grinch Stole Christmas![:D]

The Porche was smashed then it wasn't, the airplane had bullet holes then they were gone. I think it must have been a low budget movie.
Once Upon a Time in the West [;)]
Fonda's best role in my opinion, being cast against Type
But in the rules of this game, Westerns are out. So may I take your post as a vote for BTILC?
Kung Fu Hustle. Really wierd, but it had swords!
and hatchets
but it's no BTILC
That or Apocalypse Now. The beach assault scene alone trumps any whole movie.
