With all the hoopla about the movie "Red Tails," and the discussion about the Tuscagee Airmen, I thought I'd share this clip. I found it very touching. Enjoy

I noticed the kids saying the "Pledge of Allegience" at school. I fondly remember doing that when I was a kid. Now 63 years old. When did we stop doing that for fear of "upsetting" someone?? I want my country back, dammit!! The people in "charge" will eventually rename the country "Unamerica"!!! I have a slogan for the 2012 elections: CAN THE MAN!![:(!][:(]

The story is very interesting, but inaccurate. The 332nd DID NOT shoot down over "1000 enemy planes" as the narrator says. If that were true, there would have been at least a few Aces in group. There were only 400-450 Tuskegee airman deployed. Their record shows 112 enemy planes destroyed in air-to-air combat and 150 on the ground. The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is a great story. It is also a story of brave and courageous men who unfortunately had to fight two different wars at the same time, but embellishing their story, I think, takes away from their truly great accomplishments.

According to Wiki (take it with a grain of salt):

The Tuskegee Airmen compiled the following combat records:

    261 aircraft destroyed
    148 aircraft damaged
    15,533 sorties
    1,578 missions
    66 KIA
    95 Distinguished Flying Crosses awarded
    450 Pilots sent overseas.

So, you're saying the two men in this story are lying? I liked their story.

Nope, don't think the two men are lying and yes, this is a touching story. However, the narrator's stats pertaining to the Tuskegee Airmen is bunk.

There is a member here on GB who has a tag line that says something like "you can't believe something just because it's posted on the internet - Mark Twain"

I can write that I am 6'2" 225 and have hair. Aint gonna make it so.

In agreement with the guy who said embellishing this history belittles it.

The men of the 332nd were brave men, just as the other brave men who served in WWII were. They were not better or worse than any other American who fought. The men who flew for the 332nd were as good as any American fighter unit. What makes their story so interesting is the war they fought against their own country. My paternal grandfather was the top turret gunner on a B-17 stationed in Italy in 1944. His plane was shot down over N Italy. I don't know if the "Red Tails" were escorting his flight, but they were stationed close by at the time.

Thanks for the clarification. I also agree with the statement that embellishing history diminishes it. Rat
