We have a chest type deepfreeze. I keep a few 2 liter soda bottles filled with water to fill unused spots in the freezer. Leave room for expansion.

Power loss, keeps food cold. Normal operations, less air space to lose cold air when opening / closing freezer. Power off long time, a few gallons of emergency water. Cost is $0.

I also use 1 liter and 2 liter soda bottles and then put them in my cooler when I go camping/hunting

I keep several bags of ice cubes stored in the chest freezer from the fridge ice maker. especially handy when going camping, etc, and a constant supply from the fridge ice maker.

2 liter soda bottles are good frozen also and cover them with ice cubes in a cheapo igloo ice chest throw the food/drink items on top and the ice will last for several days. I also sometimes lightly freeze the plastic sodapop containers before adding to the ice chest, makes the ice last longer.

I freeze 1 gallon bleach jugs after I rinse them out good to throw in Igloo water jug and to use up space in my freezer. Because it's a full gallon instead of a half gallon, the ice will last three times as long as that of a 2 L soda jug

The added benefits over those PVC ones is I have emergency water supply on hand, and I'm recycling bleach bottles, instead of throwing them away and ruining the environment

Plus it's a hell of a lot simpler of an idea than going to Home Depot, getting some 2 inch PVC with a bunch of caps, cutting the PVC.glueing on the caps on it after you fill it. And you don't get an emergency supply of water like you do with plastic jugs Plus it doesn't cost you a penny like the PVC pipes and caps do along with the glue and primer

And it is probably just my paranoia acting up again, but go to Home Depot and buy a bunch of 12" PVC and a buncha caps, you might get a visit from some Homeland Security folks.

Especially if you were to have bought a couple of bags of ammonium nitrate fertilizer at the same time...... [:p]
