My wife has made less then $6,000 this year. Does she still need to file for taxes? Would this still count as taxable income if we file jointly?

Yes, basically, if you make more than $600 you have to file. You can file jointly, but you have to report her income also.

I took the Al Sharpton tax classes and I say just ignore all income, just ask for a refund, pick any number and they will send you a check.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

We have an actual CPA who is a member off the forum, but he seldom posts. I believe that the cut off for married and filing separately is $4050, so with $6K in income, she has to file one way or the other.

If any state or federal tax was withheld by an employer, she would need to file regardless of whether or not it was above the minimum taxable amount.

And, she may be able to claim the "McCain bonus": the refundable Earned Income Credit.

I like Express 1040, online tax prep software that allows folks to calculate & file a federal tax return for free.

Is it self employment income or W2 income? Are you filing as married filing joint or married filing separate? If self employment income, yes she definitely has to file. If W2 income, it all depends if you are filing MFJ or MFS.

Unless there is some type of extinuating (sp?) circumstance (back taxes, student loans, child support, etc), I don't see why you would want to file separately. And filing jointly you could file the Injured Spouse form to protect the injured spouses refund. Her exemption and the increase of standard deduction would more than offset the 6k of income and benefit you.

Edit - I just saw you asked if you filed jointly. Yes, if it is either W2 or self employment earnings, it has to go on your joint tax return.

With that low of income it may very well be to your advantage to file anyway.

Credits and such can sometimes give you back more then you paid in.

Not that you would take it [:D]
