Captain Obvious strikes again...

Fella walks out of my store yesterday, and gets into his jeep. I see him out there, quite a while, fiddling around with it, while sitting in the drivers seat. Finally, he gets out and comes back into the store. Asks me if I know anything about ignition switches, as his key will not turn in the ignition. Worked fine when he pulled up. I tell him I'll look at it, but I'm really no mechanic. I do understand locks, though. I tell him to make sure it's in park. It is. Turn the steering wheel a bit, just to make sure it hasn't got things bound up. He does. Still nothing. Turn the key over and try the other side. Nothing. Give the switch a couple taps, just to make sure a disc isn't hung up. Nothing. Wiggle, and jiggle the key around. Nothing. Then Captain Obvious whispers in my ear.

I tell him, OK, reallly stupid question here, but I want to be thorough. Are you absolutely certain that this is the right key? He gets this stupid look on his face, and I can see the dawn breaking in his eyes. Pulls another key out of his pocket, and starts it right up.

Sometimes the simplest answers are overlooked.

A nephew called me one night. He was downtown in his mother's car, and it wouldn't start. I went down, told him to get in and try it, and oh yeah, remember to push the clutch in, it being a straight drive. Uh-huh.[:I]

I have done something like that.
I left a Bar one night and got into My Car,The Key unlocked the Door fine but would not turn in the Ignition Switch.
After a minute I got a good look at the inside of the Car and found I was in the wrong Car.
It looked like Mine on the outside but I had a five speed and this one was a automatic. Boy did I feel dumb.Later I found that this was a common problem with some Ford Probes.

When I was younger... I was out with my Mom doing something... Can't remember the full details.
    BUT... What happened is...
We came out of the store walked down the line of cars and got in the ol'63 Bel-Air Station Wagon...
And she tried to start the engine... No dice.

A few minutes later... Another lady came up and just stood at the door with a puzzled look on her face...

My Mom rolled the window down and asked... "Yes ... Can I help you ?"
She said... "Not at ALL... But you need this key to start the engine... "
My Mom looked a bit startled and bewildered... And asked the lady... "Where did you get that key ?"
The lady simply said... "Off my dresser this morning... Ma'am this is MY Car YOUR trying to start."

You've never seen a woman move so fast as my Mom did that afternoon... [:D][:D][:D]

Our Chevy was a few more cars down the line... Looked EXACTLY the same... Chevy Green.
Even down to the junk inside and dirt outside.
She told me NOT to say 'anything' to Dad when we seen him later... [;)]
Boy did I take advantage of that one for a while... [^][^][^]

Back in those days... People never thought much about locking doors.
I'm not sure if she had unlocked the door or not...

Interesting though that two separate instances occurred to identocal cars in the same color!!!

Future son in law called me from another town about ten miles away and said he locked his keys in the car and he and my daughter couldn't get home. Went to the right store and there there stood looking dejected. Keys were in the ignition and his door wouldn't open. I could see the button on the passenger side was up. Walked around the car opened the door reached over and got the keys and went around and opened his door!! They got married but it didn't last long.[:)]

    My story....

I left a place one afternoon, got in, started the car and was about 1/2 mile away wondering how the radio station got changed, the gas gauge indicated full and the car smelled 'strange'.????

Realized my mistake, returned the car to the parking lot, got in 'my' car and left.

    Haven't done that since....
