Shipping Ammo

Excuse my ignorance on the subject but could someone give me the "nutshell" version of shipping ammo? Are there different rules for different states? Does it need to be shipped a certain way by certain carriers? Thanks!

How much of a hassle is it to ship a box of ammo from one individual to another? Is UPS the one to use and about how much?

What are the rules to shipping ammo?
I could look on GB to read the rules but would like to ask here cuz there might be details that aren't included in GB's explanation plus yaall can show off your infinite knowledge and experience. Thanks.

Hi. I'm new to this site and new to selling ammo. I learned a few things recently by selling a full box of vintage ammo on here. I thought five bucks to send it priority mail would be no problem. Well, before actually mailing it, I researched and see as most of you know I'm sure, I should not do that. So I thought, no problem, I see I can just send it UPS. When I did, they wanted $15 to do so. How do you guys handle shipping ammo? Is it customary to charge $15-$20 for shipping it? Will people bidding on here expect to be paying that much in shipping charges? Thanks for any advise you can give me.

I sold a box of obsolete ammo on auction the other day ( the first in a while )and cannot believe the hassle. Of course the postal service is out.I boxed it up following UPS guiedlines and took it to their store.I was told I would have to take it to their main office
about forty miles away. They did not bother to mention that they opened at 4:30 P.M.,go figure. Close by is a FedEx terminal so I stopped in and was told bluntly that they did not ship ammo, period.
I checked their website and found instructions on shipping small arms ammunition. I know people who ship ammo by not mentioning what is in the box,but I was trying to do it the right way. This was a lower 48 ground shipment,20 rounds, not a nuke.

Robert Cole's response to an earlier thread indicated that you can ship ammo via UPS. That reminded me of something I've been wanting to ask you all. What does ORM-D mean?

Every time I get a bulk shipment of ammo from Midway or Cabelas it has a sticker on it that says ORM-D (and one that says HEAVY!).

    Thanks,

I have to ship about 500 rnds of ammo and I live in a small little town. will ups or fedex do a pick up on this. I tried to ship though the closest store but was told i had to go to a hub, same as shipping a pistol. I have never shipped ammo before. The guy i traded a gun for wanted this ammo and i'v been trying to get it to him for about month now but haven't had to make a trip anywere close to a hub. And with being laid off i dont want to go 80 miles out of my way just to ship ammo.

I had wanted to do a give away of a couple of boxes of original Winchester Black Talons ammo for my 100th post but looking into the shipping it looks like it might be more trouble than its worth. I understand USPS is out of the question. Anyone ever shipped ammo? What's the procedure? Thanks.

The UPS instructions baffle me. In simple language, how do I prepare a box for shipping ammo? Is the ORM-D label needed or not? Can I download it?

    Thanks

I bought some 460 weatherby ammo from GB (at a very good price)and the fella just outside New Orleans is getting nowhere trying to ship to me. Is there any one in the New Orleans area that would be willing to take this ammo from him and ship to me? I would pay all expenses and a bonus. Just contact me soon as I'm running out of options. Thanks.

I am going to use UPS ground with ORM-D lables but I need to know of any restrictions from one individual in Louisiana to another in Illinois. Is a copy of their FOID card all I need?

Yes, I am still alive (I think).

Anyways, I was hoping to educate myself here a bit. What's my most cost-effective way to ship ammo? It's a small package, but big-bore rounds, so even though it's smaller than a shoe box, it weighs 15#, and UPS/FedEx want between $25 and $30 for ground. Are there any cheaper alternatives?

    Thanks, all.

Guys, our sticky on the experts forum is 7+ years old and I'm wondering if there have been new restrictions placed in these years. I have a couple of boxes of old Colt .32 long that I want to put on the auction side. I don't want to go to jail for this little amount of money.

    Thanks,

Its really a toss up UPS or Fedex. I use UPS personally. No extra charge tell you hit like 50lbs or 60lbs I believe.

    UPS
    mark "ORM-D" on the package.
100 rounds is about 12 bucks. not sure when the weight/rate changes.

I've used UPS in the past, mostly just because they have a much closer facility to my house

Where I am UPS hub says it is illegal to ship ammo so all of my out going ammo goes FedEx.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

That's such an annoying and common occurance for USPS, UPS, and Fedex; talk to 4 different hubs or 4 different employees and get 5 different answers [xx(]

USPS will NOT ship ammo period....I use the UPS hub near my house in Eagan MN....never had a problem...UPS "stores" around here will not accept ammo for shipment.

Fedex has a new system. They have established a Dangerous Goods Section, which issues all procedures for Dangerous Goods (which includes ammunition).

Fedex will ONLY accept ammunition if they pick it up from you. The hubs & Fedex Office will not accept it. Ammo is not a hazardous item, & no certification is required to ship < 50 lbs. The packing & ORM-D label must meet DOT requirements.

I know, I was just refering to any question in general. Long guns for example. Of the 3 USPS stations near me, one says only FFL can ship them, another says anyone can ship to an FFL, and the third actually had one employee tell me just don't declare it as a gun and you'll be fine.
