I had a shot at 100, 100 watt Sylvanias for $25.
I didn't pop on'em...[V]
Texas passed a law that told Uncle Fed to stuff the stupid greenie law that banned them...and 100w bulbs are still available here, same price as always...maybe I should list some for 5 x the price...[:D]
Just about the same brightness but its not the evil 100w
Even places where I need to dimm the light, there's models out there that can be dimmed.
Wanted to try LED's, but only got one place where I could use it - but even that works brilliantly.
I now use about 15% of what I normally used, and I feel like I burn the lights longer.
In a couple of places where I need bright light immediately - I tried the new Hallogen bulbs - the "regular" bulbs where the thread is replaced by a high-pressure halogen bulb.
Those work absolutely wonderful.

I liked the CFL's when they came out. They worked, all lasted a good five years as advertised. Had my entire house converted over.
Problems began when I started replacing them. They would start dim and slowly brighten up. They would die after a few months. Some flickered.
Turned out that when CFL's began they were made only in the USA, where they were invented. Then factories began moving to China. Prices dropped but so did quality, also design suffered. I mean they redesigned to make them cheaper.
There are no more CFL makers in the USA or anywhere on the planet other than China. None that I can find anyway, and I have made some effort. Emails and web searches and such.
One CFL remains working in my place. A sealed flood light in my backyard. Must be ten years old. Was two there, one died a few months ago. Found I still had the box from when I pulled the incandescent floods and put in the CFL floods. So I put the old bulbs back in.
If CFLs were made in the USA I'd never of stopped buying them.
Oh well.
This American company still makes incandescent and other light bulbs here in the USA. They design and sell CFLs too, but those are made in China and imported.

I bougth about 3 or 4 of the 4packs to swap out the lights in the house. I had about 3 bulbs go bad within the first week or two. Replaced them & haven't had any bulbs go out since.
I think if the CFL's are going to pop, they do it pretty quick from my experience with them.
I replaced the whole house with the 60watt equiv. & some 100watt equiv. like in the bathrooms. I have noticed a small amount less usage....small.
We have CCFL's in our ceiling fans as those are what they came with. we had fairly new fans in the last house (less than 5 years old) and they did NOT like the CCFL's at all!
I put the new bulbs the power company sent me in the Step daughters room. I won't have em in the rest of the house and I'd not have done it in her room but she just can't seem to turn the lights off when she's not using them
I have several of the 100w bulbs but I noticed that they are now selling 90w bulbs in the store......lol
Just about the same brightness but its not the evil 100w
Yeah, about 90% of the same brightness. But even those cease at the end of 2013.
The 100 watt deal is just the start, the other wattages are to be phased out over a period of years if they have not changed the law.
The CFL makers are all in China because of the hazardous material used in thier manufacture. Uncle Sam outlaws incandesents and then makes the 'suggested' replacement impossible to manufacture in the US with EPA regs.
...
Not correct. USA companies moved plants to China for the lower labor costs, to increase profit margins.
My employer uses chemicals a good deal more hazardous than mercury. The quantities are much greater than the mercury in a CFL bulb. The amount of mercury in a CFL would just about cover the period at the end of this sentence. EPA and OSHA regulations do not stop our manufacturing from making money, it would not do so to a CFL maker.
...I do, I hate the squiggly expensive, no light giving SOB's, burn out quick greenie bulbs.
Texas passed a law that told Uncle Fed to stuff the stupid greenie law that banned them...and 100w bulbs are still available here, same price as always...maybe I should list some for 5 x the price...[:D]
I love Texas. It really is different from the other states.
85 mph speed limit on the new Austin bypass, etc etc.
I do have three of the longer-lasting bulbs, a flood over the sink and two on the front porch. Incandescents simply did not last on the front porch. I figure it was the differences in temperature and humidity that got them.
So, about 3 years ago, I sprung for the longer lasting bulbs. I don't remember whether they are CFLs or LEDs, but they have been running continuously ever since.
The flood over the sink has lasted a long time too. My only problem with it is that it comes on dim and has to warm up for several minutes to make any real light.
Living Room Wash Room Bedroom Bathroom
They Last just Fine If You learn How to Fire them [;)]
Bathroom Is the Toughest
That is the Room That gets the Most On Off Cycles Per Day /Month/ Year
When You get up in the Am When You turn it On leave it On til Everyone Is Done For the Day .....On Off Cycles kills Them

Maybe "don't stop them from making money" but they certainly make it less profitable.
