IHC M1 Garands from CMP

IHC M1 Garands go on sale at CMP on 11 March. Orders received before 11 March will not be accepted.

If you want one of these rifles and haven't bought anything from CMP for a few years I recommend you use the day and a half to get your paperwork done now.

They are limited one to a customer. If you want one, GOOD LUCK. They will go fast. I'd like to have one, but I've already used up the next three Christmases.

I took basic with an IHC Garand. At the time, I thought the name was kind of amusing. [;)]

    Unfortunately the CMP allows resale....

So, the people that want CMP guns to keep have to play games to get them.

    I can't think of anyone who would re-sell a CMP M1 Garand.

Bummer. They can't ship direct to your home anymore in the Demokratik People's Republik of Kalifornia.[xx(]
I've had a 1911 pistol, a M1 carbine & two M1 rifles shipped to my home in the past.
At least they do offer free shipping. The shipping was 16% of what I paid for the 1911. ($2.85 "packing & handling" $14.15 for the pistol)[:D]

They are resold on GB all the time, for a tidy profit...

I must admit I sold my first CMP Garand....felt so bad about it I bought another one, a nicer grade one and will not likely ever sell it.

    Just stirring the pot. [:)]

Someone got his shorts in a bunch a while back about someone selling CMP Garands for profit. The fact that they all sold at auction, and at prices higher than the starting bid seemed to have been lost on the complainant.

I've bought a couple of CMP Garands on the auction side. I find it to be much more convenient than buying direct.

Fewer IHCs were produced than any other manufactures M1s: 337,623. Compare that number with the 513,880 from Winchester and 428,600 from Harrington and Richardson and you can see that IHCs are few in number. They are also hard to find. The reasons for this are subject to a lot of speculation, but it is commonly believed that the majority of the IHC production run was sent overseas to our various allies. A large proportion of the M1s sent to the puppet troops of our Saigon Stooge government as well as our former lackey, the Shah of Iran, are thought to have been IHCs. Obviously the Vietnamese and Iranians are not in any big rush to send their remaining M1s home.

There is nothing magical about International Harvester M1s, but there is nothing magical about Winchester M1s either....Both are just hard to find. Most people want an IHC simply because they want to complete a collection of all four M1 manufacturers: Springfield Armory, Winchester, H&R and IHC. This is the second release of IHCs from the CMP. I bought one from the CMP last year and then bought two more at resale (OH MY GOD!!! someone sold their personal property). If you want an IHC then by all means buy one. Understand that while you are paying a premium price, you are not getting a premium rifle. International Harvesters are no better than any other M1, they are just harder to find.

Good luck to these who roll the dice and make their purchases sight unseen. If you manage to get a rifle then by all means post some photos of it.

CMP says this is probably the last IHCs they will see.

They will probably uncover a few more, but those will most likely be sold in their retail store in Anniston. They no longer list Winchesters, but a handful do show up in the store every month. The last time you could simply order an IHC was back in 2002, when a Service Grade IHC cost $550. They didn't have a good grasp of pricing back then because a Springfield was $500, an H&R $525 and a Winchester $575. The order limit was five M1s per year back in those days (it is one dozen now). With the exception of the CMP's own auction site and a very limited release back in 2005 (200 or 300 rifles), prior to 2014 there had been no IHCs available for 12 years.

This is likely the end of the line.

They (CMP) sold service grade IHCs last year. Actually, IHCs are probably the worst of the Garands as far as workmanship is concerned. They had all kinds of problems during manufacture. Both Springfield armory and HRA had to manufacture receivers for them at one point.
