OK, long hairs, a bulldozer track's velocity relative to the ground. It's zero where it touches the ground (unless it loses traction), how fast is it on the top, and how can the velocity vary since the ends are connected???

It will depend upon whether it is a standard or triangular track.

    Please be more specific.

On a standard track, the top is moving at twice the ground speed of the cat, and it the same direction.

Average velocity, just like with an automotive tire, is equal to ground speed. Were it any different, the track would either travel ahead of or lag behind the vehicle.

Haven't really thought about the speed of a triangular drive arrangement. As the triangle becomes infinitely tall, the horizontal speed of the legs approaches the ground speed of the vehicle. A complete description of the drive mechanism, including driver and idler positions and diameters will be required to arrive at an answer.

Triangular track arrangement is refered to as a High Track in the industry, atleast out here on the west coast.
