Question about our new puppy

We are feeding this new puppy 3 times a day with puppy food (high dollar stuff that was recomended by the pet supply shop mixed with a small amout of puppy meat softened with water and milk).

Well the puppy is still getting into the dry cat food as well as eating it's own food.

Should I worry about it eating the cat food?

Probably not at this stage, but you don't want it to become a habit. Cat food has way more protein than dogs need, so he is apt to get fat on it if he eats it a lot.

When Sam was a puppy, he would eat cat food, either fresh or recycled, any chance he got. I used the training collar to break him from it. After a couple of "lessons," he gave the cat food dish and the litter box a wide berth.

Yes. Keep him away from the cat food.

It'll give him a taste for the end product, you know, what you find in the litter box.

We put the cat food up a little higher, since they can jump a little bit. We put ours up on a table. Just wait till they start eating everybodys poop!

Our dogs eat the cat's food when they can get to it. Solution is to put the cat food somewhere the dog can't get to it.
It hasn't seemed to hurt them. But constant access to food can make your dog get fat. Especially if they are "house dogs" that don't run free.
We have a big fenced in yard, but even so our dogs have gotten to where they prefer to stay inside most of the time. Therefore they don't get as much exercise as they should. Before we knew it, we had FAT dogs and didn't really notice it until people began commenting on it.
Altho we had them on feeding schedule for their dog food, they also got some table scraps and ate the cat's food.
We learned the hard way that a STRICT diet is a must.

Yep, that's another thing. Cat crap is like candy to dogs.

I guess I'll have to find a small table to keep the cat food on. This dog is going to be a combination indoor outdoor dog so I want to break it of the habbit now.

Dogs are just like little kids. Make lots of rules and enforce them all the time, and make sure all the other family members do too. It'll seem like all the work it takes will never end but if you stick with it the dog will be awesome once it gets to be 5 or 6 months old.

This little puppy plays with the cats. At first the cats did not know what to think of it, but now they get along fine even curling up and sleeping with each other.

Our cats are strictly inside cats and the youngest one had never been exposed to a dog at all.

High protein is also hard on your dogs kidneys.
I feed my high protein 26/18 (26% protein/18% fat) in the winter because it helps then to deal with cold wheather.
I feed them high fat 24/20 in the summer. My dogs are very very active and have trouble "faten up". That's way I feed then the high fat in the summer and also to give their kidneys a break from the high protein.

Dogs LOVE cat food, at least my Lab does. Almost impossible to keep them out of it. Cat food is generally higher in protien than dog food. Won't hurt the dog, but too much might make him a little fatty.

Shelby will sit there and wait for the cat to finish eating; then when you take your eyes off her for even one second she'll swoop in and gobble up all the cat food in two gobbles! She'll make sure the cat has eaten all it wants to though!

    That is a nice dog!

Thats one of the Problems with dogs. If there is food out they will eat it, all of it.

Cats will only eat what they need and come back later when they are again Hungry.

When I had my By-pass surgery, I did not have anyone to take care of my Cats. So I left 3 days worth of canned food, in automatic feeders and enought dry food to last at least 3 weeks. Water Just left a Faucet on with a bowl in the sink. I have some of those automatic Litter Boxs so even that was well taken care of.

    Try that with a dog.

    are your cats pretty acrobatic?
May want to put the cat food on a counter or something. A friend's family does that, they have Schnauzers that will inhale any food left sitting around and eat themselves sick [xx(]

cat food made my dog ill, and he was full grown. I think it would be a bad idea to let a puppy get at it. I think it's because the protein is way too high for a dog.

    puppy's need a good blend.

22/24% protein at best if its working dog breed, dont keep them on it after 24 mths, plenty of oil 9%. a good working dog mix will do it.
Too much protein fry's the dogs brain..not good !!

uncooked raw chicken/rabbit is superb teeth.

dry food can be mixed with something like pasta /rice/ spuds & a bit of everything does it good.Dont change its diet too quickly, introduce a change bit by bit, or it may upset the stomach.

while there teething keep it firm.

older they get, lessen the protein -

Cat food isn't a proper diet for puppies, or dogs for that matter. Puppies have very specific dietary needs and cat food won't meet them, can and often does cause medical issues later in life.

As a side; I personally advise against it, but. If you use treats for training use the food you are feeding him. Pup don't care if it's something different, just that it's food and comes from your hand.

Your pup might start using the litter box if he continues to eat cat food.[:D]
