As some of you know, I have a 65 Chevelle Malibu SS that i am working on.

Its at the point now that i can start driving it to work and around town. So i decided that its time to have the car titled and regestered in my name.

Because its a out of state title they tell me that i have to have the car inspected first by a officer.

So i get a officer to come to my house and he asked to see the vin#, I show him the tag on the inside of the drivers door, Then he asked to see a second vin# elsewhere on the car[?] Apparently they have to have two vin# on the car in order to do the inspection.

I could not find another one right away, so he left and said he would do some research to see if he could find were another vin# is at.

After he left i spent all night in the shop looking for another vin#(inside the car, Outside the car, On the frame rails somewhere) But i could not find anything.

You guys have any ideas of where a second Vin# would be[?] And WTH do i do if there is no Vin# to be found[?]

Try looking at the dash in front of the steering wheel, from the outside. Should be a small metal plate' readable from the outside.

On the firewall, drivers side, there will be a small plate with the vin and all of the build info.

usually I think on the engine block or manifold, but not on cars that old.

quote:Vehicle Serial Number on Block - All blocks starting in approximately 1968 and most big blocks in 1966 & 1967, were all stamped with the serial number of the car it was being installed in. This CON VIN could be on the engine pad or by the oil filter depending on the year, plant, and engine type.

On many 1969 Chevelles this CON VIN location was by the oil filter. Research shows that Atlanta and Kansas City stamped the vehicle serial number by the oil filter.http://www.chevellestuff.com/69velle/trim_tag_decoding.htm

I did a quick Google search. Apparently, there's only one location for the vin number on a 1965 Chevelle.

Chevelle, Chevy II, & Full Size, (1965-67) - Found on left, front door hinge pillar.

Most of your REAL cars and trucks only have the one VIN location. Yes they do have a paint and trim package tag under the hood usually on the inner fender but all it has on it is paint and trim codes.

Yes the build plate is there, But chevy didn't put a serial on the build plates of that year chevelle.

There is a Cowl Tag that will have a partial VIN # on it. Usually the 5 numbers after the first "dash" (first pair of numbers is year) on the Tag will be the same as the VIN.

US and Canadian Cowl Tags vary slightly, but they are both located on the firewall front bulkhead just above the windshield wiper motor, these are held in place by special open holed rivets.

You might also have a partial VIN # stamped on the driver's side (in the wheel well) body behind a rubber flap.

Note: The industry doesn't like the word "firewall". I'm showing my age.

    From another forum....

The VIN is on the door post, and is NOT the number on the cowl data plate. They are two different things. The cowl tag number is not the VIN and is not what is used for registration and titling.
Half of the lives they tell about me aren't true.

I would also check the bumpers. I've seen some VIN # stamps on front and rear fenders before.

You might also contact your DMV and let them know of the situation. I had thought that there always was one on the Dash as well, guess not.

You HAVE to be able to work something out.

Nebraska law states that you have to have two visible vin numbers on seperate parts of the car before you can have the car inspected to have the title changed.

Something tells me i have just walked into a poop pile here[:(]

there is one VIN on that car, like said already there is a trim tag under the hood and a frame number on the driver rear just in frt of the bumper bracket, but it wont match anything on the VIN i think it is a part number, your dmv should be able to help the officer might have not known all there was to know about an old car. i.e.: 59 CHEVY pickup does not have a VIN. Alabama did not title cars 72 and back all you get from them is a bill o sale and a tag registration.

Not sure about Nebraska, but in KY and TN with a car that old you can register is as an antique and bypass a bunch of that crap. My 60 Fury only has one VIN, on the door post. No problem to register it in KY or TN.

He'd be really disappointed with my 356...

Used to be you could get a COA from the factory that showed the build sheet - what color, VIN, engine #, tranny #, options, date of birth.

Oh well, a 6 digit VIN is usually enough to throw 'em off...
