DES MOINES, Iowa -An Iowa House of Representatives committee has approved a bill that would lower the age at which children in Iowa could use guns with a parent's supervision.
The Judiciary Committee approved House Study Bill 201 Wednesday by a 19-2 vote. The measure would make several changes to the state's gun laws, including legalizing the use of a suppressor to silence a weapon.
The bill would also ban public access to a database of names of people with permits to carry and purchase weapons.
Meredith Gibson, 11, and Natalie Gibson, 9, are two girls who made an online push to revamp Iowa's gun law that bans anyone under the age of 14 from shooting a handgun.
"I feel happy because it passed to go to the big room," Meredith said.
The girls said they will track the legislation.
"Because I want to shoot my handgun again," Natalie Gibson said. "Again, it's like a sport. And I want to be able to shoot my gun and have fun again."
However, state Rep. Jo Oldson said even responsible gun operators cannot always predict a child's behavior.
"Kids are kids," Oldson said. "And kids' ability to make judgments about a lot of things in life, certainly guns, pose risks."
The bill will move to the full House for a vote. The state Senate is debating a similar bill.

Oh and I did notice that as the girl turned toward the camera her pistol did not. She kept it pointed down range.
good job for those girls. Nice to see them standing up for themselves.[^]
My daughter fired my single six when she was 3.
