Do you think it would be cost effective?

Right now I'm driving around in a 1996 Honda passport 3.2. I do have a 4 cyl. Ford ranger though, and I was wondering if y'all thought it would be cost effective to fix up the ranger, or if I'd be better off riding around in the Honda. See, the ranger seemed like it only got slightly better mileage than the Honda when I drove it, maybe 2 or 3 mpg. But, it needs front brake pads and rotors, the rear drums need turned and it needs new brake shoes and wheel cylinders, needs two new headlight assemblies, a new battery, probably wheel bearings, needs an alignment, 4 decent 14-215/70 tires, and there's no telling what else. Y'all think it'd be worth fixing up to try and save on gas, or just let it sit? I want to fix it up but it doesn't sound cost effective, and I don't want to sell it (first car given to me by grandpa) but right now I'm considering seeing what he would do. Y'all think it'd be worth fixing up?

Sell both and get a better mpg car.

Looks to me like it would take you years to pay off all that work just in the cost savings of 2-3mpg. Of course, if gas hits 10/gal that may not be true. Even still, that's a lot of work and very little gain.

Drive the Ford into the ground.
Sell it for scrap and use that money for gas in the Honda.

If you don't sell both of them at least sell one of them.

Surely that would lower your insurance payments too....

I don't blame you for wanting a 4X4 but if it starts cutting into your food money to have it you would be foolish to keep it.

As I understand it, you're about 18 or so. The pickup is going to get you a lot more attention from the girls than the a Honda. I'd keep it for that reason alone, were I that age.

Woodhog, it got me lots of attention in the form of "look at that pile of crap". Besides, already have a very nice GF and in a week or so ill have had her for a year now. But, I did find a Subaru legacy on CL for $500 im gonna check out. And actually, the way it's set up it shows the ranger as my DD on insurance and the Honda as an extra, and I called and asked and they (farm bureau) said my insurance would go up if I transfered the Honda to my main car and got rid of the ranger. That's gotta be a big crock of crap. I'm gonna meet with the insurance lady sometime and tell her to show me the numbers.

    Just fix the dern truck.
Cause you know there's somthin women like about a pickup man.
Now that might not mean much to some of us old geezers, but
to a young feller like yourself, you have to think about these things.

You didn't mention the year model of the Ranger, but it probably has a 2.3, 4 banger and is a 5 speed. My Ranger is a 1993 2.3, 5 speed with 104,000 miles on it and it is in good shape. Highway driving it gets around 26mpg. These are good vehicles and I have seen several around 300,000 miles on them. If the body, transmission, and engine is in good shape I would fix it.
