93 jeep grand cherokee limited

A friend of mine has a 93 jeep grand cherokee limited. It has 177000ish on it and the front drivers cv joint is starting to make noise. It runs great and just had a tune up. Does anyone know of any common problems these jeeps have? Are they like toyota trucks and run for 300,000 miles? any info you have would be great.

For a jeep that many miles would normally have it on life support.
I beg to differ. I put over 200k on two Jeep Cherokee's, both were still running strong when I sold them. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another with only 177,000 on it.
The old Cherokee's were bullet proof.
Not so for the "Grand".
Most common problem. Has to be that the exhaust and under body does not like salt or water much. The steam from the exhaust can cause the passenger side floor pans to rust out.
If you or he does a lot of trail work with it. Pay attention to the fan clutch. If you have a 4.0 engine that has both an electric and manual cooling fan. The manual fan clutch sits to close to the radiator for my taste. The fan clutch hub rubbed a hole in my 1995's radiator, Not bad enough to need replacing. But it did hit. I removed the Clutch fan setup. Replaced the studs with bolts and then installed another electric fan from another Jeep Cherokee with the same set up as mine. It took a little trim work to get the fan to fit. Then wired them both to an oil pressure relay switch. As long as it has oil pressure the fans will run. It works great and the engine even runs cooler when crawling up hills or through tight trails.
The only thing I have never liked on a Cherokee is the shock mounts on the rear axles.. I own two of them and gave a 1985 2.8L engined XJ to a guy to haul in for junk. The shock mounts could have been designed better to get them up out of the way of logs, ruts and rocks...lol
While you are looking at the CVU Front Axle. It may be worth your while to look at the Front Wheel Hub. They cost around $80.00 each new.
These are a non service item and can go bad without much warning. They are easy to replace in about a hour for each wheel. I carry a spare in the Off road Cherokee that we just use to trail ride with. You can check the Wheel Hubs by raising the jeep, removing the front tire and picking up on the wheel hub by the lug studs. If it is bad you will know it. The Brake Rotor will also show signs of wear on the back side (inside).
A complete Front CVU Axle can be bought for around $50.00 and up. It pays to buy the entire axle assembly and replace them both at the same time instead of just messing with the CV Joints. For the complete CVU Axle's CV Joints will be greased and sealed with the rubber boots from the factory.

If it's running and will pass state inspection, it's worth that.

$500 would be about one payment on a new Jeep Wrangler.
