You Might want to do some reading and research on the subject.

I would take something to gut a deer with and maybe some bullets.

Pick up the flier of hunting regs. Western Side is a little tricky to figure out where You can and Cannot hunt.

I would read that 1st then Ask some question. But it might be better if you went with another hunter.

Not me I quit. Unsafe here in Oregon.

Best to go with an experienced hunter. Easy to strike up a conservation at the local gun shop with a hunter. Or join a club.

It is really easy to get lost so a GPS is handy. And you cannot learn from a book the proper way to dress your deer when you shoot one. here is more to it than just slitting open the belly and pulling everything out.

Good luck and remember it is more addictive that crack cocaine when you harvest that first buck.

Take a hunter safety course, they not only teach you safety but also have a lot of good tips and tricks. They have both kid and adult classes and most programs are free.

I always take first time hunters into a heavy deer traffic area and set them up in a stand. It forces them to stay still and be quiet. Just be quiet and keep the wind at your advantage.

Try to kill something that looks big. Good hunters always pass up the younger bucks and nice does so they have something to hunt next season.

The hunters ed will also show you how to gut your deer. A must!

Eat the heart or drink the blood on your first kill and you are then a deerhunter.

Also rent escanaba in da moon light for the fun of it...

I really hope you become a deer hunter. Oregon really needs more hunters to counter all the damn liberal hippie granola crunchers. Good luck in finding some good hunting land. I hope you take my suggestion on hunters safety serious. My wife just aced her first hunters ed and learned a lot of cool tricks that I didn't know. You might even meet another hunter there with land that wants to drive some deer!

Good luck and get on it!!

If you are ever in Montana, I can show you Mule deer that will give you a heart attack. The elk and whitetail are my secret! :)

Stop in at your Fish Wildlife and Parks office, you can usually catch a game warden in the office.

These guys despite their reputation are pretty good about helping point out a good place for you to start.

You wont have any worries in the back of your mind as to whether you are legal or not. They are not to busy this time of year so its a good time to have a chat with them.

And talk to the guys at the range, a lot of guys are willing to help a new hunter out.

Just remember this...NO QUESTION IS A DUMB ONE.

I wish the best of luck to you.

You will be just fine with that rifle. Do at least go with a friend-packing out a deer alone is not fun. GPS OR knowledge with topographic map & compass is mandatory. There are videos that can show you how to field dress the animal but it sure helps if you have a person there who has done it before.

Storm do you really drink the blood of a deer?[:0] No way am I drinking the blood of any animal--obviously there is blood in muscle but cooking the meat kills the parasites.-not taking the chance of getting some blood borne pathogen or parasite.

Yep, drank the blood of my first deer as a kid. The only other option was eating a chunk of the raw heart or not going hunting with the clan anymore.

don't be a dick. we need all the hunters we can get. some are not as lucky as us to grow up with hunting in the family and we need to promote and educate it to ALL who are interested.

if you have nothing good to say to new hunters that would help our people out, keep it to yourself.

Take some patience with ya as well. It is a virtue. If you get board with it take a target or to with ya. That way you can scare all the dear away and at least get to shoot your gun.[:D]

If you ever make it out here to the "Right" coast, look me up. If it's October, November or December we'll go kill some deer.

If you were up here in ND i would consider taking you out your first time or at least setting you up with someone that would. I dont like people out hunting big game with a rifle that have no clue what there doing. Its a accedent waiting to happen.

everybody started out as a novice. The only reason we stuck around was because the more experienced hunters weren't dirtbags toward us and helped us learned. It is our responsibility and privilege to do the same.

Not sure about Oregon, but in most states, at 23, you're going to need a hunter education class in order to get a license.

The poster asked a simple polite question. If you don't have anything to offer that would do him any good then keep your stupid comments to yourself.

That's exactly how I started out 56 years ago. Same gun and caliber. My father allowed me 4 rounds of ammo for the season. Ended the season with 2 deer and two rounds.
Good luck hunt safe and don't let some nit wit discourage you.

There is nothing better than being out there in the cold and watching the world wake up. Or when a buck walks up under you and you start shaking with anticipation. Good Luck and get ready for an intense addiction.

Jeez, Bert - you are sitting in the middle of some of the best deer hunting (as well as elk, and other critters)in OryGun.

There are lots of guys within a quarter mile of you who would be overjoyed to take you/teach you.

Hit some of the taverns in the evening - you'll find a way.

    So jumping in on this...

Anyone in N Central Florida that wants to take a newbie under his/her wing for Deer season?

Done small game and plenty of sneaking around in the woods, just never deer hunting....

    bingeebob,

check out this site for information on how to gut, skin and cook your deer.

don't forget to use as many parts as you can. my dogs love the lungs and my wife always wants the heart. i love the liver with onions and garlic. you can even use the guts for sausage.

    http://eckrich.org/

keep us updated with your hunting venture. i'd like to see you bag a big buck.

My uncle Al, Bless his heart my mentor, he could do anything tough as nails. I was 13 years old, shot a buck with my .32 spl. He went down and I finished him off with a shot through the SHOULDERS. I ruined a lot of meat but put him out of his misery. Al made me dress him out by myself. I also had to wait until dusk, before going back to the truck as the other 3 hunters were still on watch. It was only 8:00A.M. Pa. is damn cold in December!!I have never failed to give assistance or advice to a novice. There is no such thing as a stupid question. I have raised 4 sons and mentored 3 nephews, all fine sportsmen. If you grind your own burger, go one pound of bacon to three pounds of venison, add your spices and put it through the grinder twice.
