I Rescued a Turtle

I saw this guy on Killiam Industrial Boulevard this morning in Laredo.
This is a busy 4 lane road, lots of truck traffic.
As I drove by at 40 mph, it looked like the turtle had gotten flipped upside down, but might not be injured.
So I turned around and stopped in the road.

Sure enough, a car had hit him and flipped him over.
Hard to believe it but he was unharmed. Not a scratch on the shell, the shell was not cracked!

I took him to the side of the road, took him about 50 feet from the road and set him down. I faced him away from the road.
He was quite lively and was wiggling around as I carried him.

I went back by a half hour later to check up on him. He was gone! And he didn't go back into the road.
This turtle had hauled *.

Nicely done! I once watched a moron in a pickup deliberately swerve into the middle of the road to hit a turtle trying to cross. [xx(]

    Thanks, Allen.

Depending on what part of the country this happened, you may have done a good deed or bad deed.

It looks like a red ear slider, and they are invasive in some areas, but indigenous in other areas.

Just an old Box Turtle, trying to get along. Had one as a pet back in the 50's, now I believe it's illegal to possess one.

Nothing wrong with a random act of kindness,
even if it is "just an old box turtle".

Sometimes I feel like one myself.

Not a box turtle, but a fairly elderly red-ear slider.

Every now and then back in the old days you'd see a turtle setting on top of a fence post where some mean * kids had put them. I rescued a couple back then.

I have moved two box turtles this year while mowing. As to the driver who swerved to hit one, I hope it flattened his tires. [}:)]

My Kids had a Painted Turtle called "Speedy" when they were young.
We were on a super busy 2 lane highway one Saturday morning and saw this poor little fella in the middle of the road tucked in tight! Cars, trucks, and motorcycles from both directions just whizzing by! Afraid to poke his head out or make a move!! He realized, he was in real big trouble.
We stopped and I dodged traffic to grab the little guy and my kids named him and kept him in a aquarium for a month or so before we released him by the creek at our farm.

A couple of years ago, I was following my sister on our way to her house to help her set up for a yard sale.

We were on a very busy 2 lane highway and traffic was furious!

All of a sudden, she hits her brakes and stops right in the middle of the road! She gets out of her car and runs out in the other lane.

Grabs a big snapping turtle and quickly places it safely on the grassy roadside bank.

Many cars came to roaring stops, including mine!

She may have saved that turtle but nearly ended not only her life but a few other humans in the process.

My sister is the epitome and true picture of a tree hugger!
