Remington 870 vs. Mossberg 500

Is it just me or does the Remington 870 kick less than the Mossberg 500?

And not by just a little... I mean it kicks a LOT LESS. Loads that will rattle my teeth loose in a Mossberg barely hiccup in a Remington.

I like them both, but if it came down to a "if you were stuck on a desert island and could only take one" sort of thing, my vote would have to go with the 870.

I'm not bashing the Mossberg, mind you. I just got a chance to fire both side by side and do a little comparing and they were equal in all things except felt recoil.

And no, the Remington was not tricked out with any sort of special stock or anything like that. Both guns were your standard off-the-shelf type models.

Which one do you guys think is better in 20 gauge?

I own a couple of Mossbergs and have shot a few of my buddies Remingtons. Really can't say too many bad things about either one. I guess if I had to choose between the two, I would say Mossberg because they are what I am familiar with.

I have both that are several decades old as well as a newer Nova and SAS semi all in same gauge and about same barrel length. The latter two have the least recoil and the former two are just about the same. My 870 is older than the 500 and a bit better made but kicks just a bit more. The 500 is very smooth and reliable.

    Doug,

No. I am fairly positive, though, that the 870 weighs a little bit more than the 500.

    FCD,

Haven't had a chance to try out the Benelli Nova yet, but you certainly have piqued my interest there.

Darn it... so many shotguns, so little time and money...[:(][;)][:D]

Well my 1300 winchester defender with 3" mags will remove glasses off your face. It is brutal probabaly because of its light weight.

I have a 870 spst I use to turkey hunt. I shoot 3.5 winchester 4 and 5 shot turkey loads and also have shot the mossberg 500 with just 3 inch and the 870 does not kick near as hard as the mossberg. that is just my 2 cents.

Not that I need a reason to go to the range, but I own one of each and may have to find out for myself.

let us know maybe it was just the mossberg that i shot but man that gun hurt to shoot it. I felt sorry for the guy that was shooting it trying to set the scope. His shoulder was black and blue so I said i would finish setting it after a couple of shots I told him he was on his own.

    I had a pistol-gripped 1399 - no buttstock = that I shot one 3" mag slug from.

I sold it within the week.

    It hurt my wrist.

I think the 870 is designed slightly better. Stiffer guide rods, for one. Also, newer 870s have the Limbsaver recoil pads on them, feels like it's gel-filled. Here's mine:

I've owned and shot both, and I believe the recoil is the same, although the 'perceived' recoil can be different, depending on how the gun fits YOU.

For low volume shooting, say a few hundred rounds per year, the Mossberg is fine. If you're shooting a lot, the 870 is the better built gun and will last longer. The great Rudy Etchen claimed he'd put 2 million rounds through his. I don't necessarliy believe that, but I've seen many with 250K rounds.

Shop around, and there's only $50-75 more for the Remington.
