whats the difference between these 2 rounds.I have never fooled with an 8mm but I always thought 8x57 was reg 8mm round,I had a guy come by the house with a Mannlicher carbine marked 8x56R and he says all he has ever shot out of it is 8mm rounds from the sporting goods store,He was wanting to trade me for one of my mossin nagants but I passed just because I have thousands of rounds of 7.62x54 and no 8mm ammo at all

Tell him I'll give him a mosin Nagant for that mannlicher. And the difference is the cartrige legnth.
Edit: If it is an actual Mannlicher It's worth 10x any Mosin

The "R" usually stands for a rimmed round like you MN in 7.62x54r.

The 7.92x57 (8x57 / 8mm Mauser) is a rimless cartridge, the 8x56R Manlicher Schonaur (sp) is a rimmed cartridge. The Euro's used 8mm rifles like we use 30cal's.
A short sample of the others would include
    8x33 Kurtz
    8x50R Lebel
    8x50R Austria/Hungery
    8mm x 50R Siamese
    8.2x53R Sako
    8x56R Austria/Hungery
    8mm x 56R Kropatschek
8x57R Mauser (same as the military round, but with a rim for use in break open rifles)
    8x58.5 Sauer
    8mm x 59 Breda MG
    8mm x 68 S

Yeah the 8x56 is rimmed and shorter and not compatible with the 8mm Mauser.

There was three common 8x56 rounds, two rimmed and one rimless. 8x56 Mannlicher-Schoenauer was rimless, 8x56 Hungarian-Mannlicher was rimmed and the 8x56 Kropatchek was also rimmed. My guess would be its the Hungarian.
