HELP!
Frontier charges me 36 bucks a month for LOUSY internet service (DSL). It is CONSTANTLY failing, going off line, slowing down, crashing pages loading ect.

Is Hughes NET worth looking at? The reviews are poor at best but is it really that bad?

I am only looking at satellite because no matter what company supplies the service over DSL it is still the same junk equipment and phone lines used now, just a different biller.

Are any satellite internet providers worth the money?

I got HughesNet when it was DIRECWAY. DIRECWAY sucked and when it changed to HughesNet it got even worse. Then I had a problem they either couldn't or wouldn't fix. I went to Verizon and got one of their USB modems. It's just a little gizmo you plug into a USB port and instant internet. Very few problems and when there is a problem it's fixed pretty damn quick. No antennas, no wires, and it's not tied to one computer. You can put it into whatever computer you're using and you're on the internet. The only requirement is a USB port, and a monthly charge of course.

On the negative side, it can't handle GARMIN map downloads, but then neither can HughesNet.
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.

Internet and providers is too regional to say who is best. Any satellite provider is only as good as the contractor who installs the antenna.

DSL- there's either paradise or nightmare again depending largely on the installer.

If you're in a DSL service area chance is you may also be in an area with a system operating like WiFi on the Cellular B channels. If so it may be a superior value to satellite or DSL.

Cable- joy of my life. After being told there was no cable available at my house for over 4 years, I got cable through a remarketer, in onl6 6 weeks after TimeWorthless paid an engineer to drive from Syracuse to Rochester and take pictures of the cable hanging on the pole. I'd only given them the pole number 15 times. Engineer told me Time-Worthless had managed to loose all their maps over 9 different computer upgrades in 15 years.

Since getting cable, I've come to be on a first name basis with several of the techs. I even have their cell numbers.

We have Wild Blue satellite. If you use it much it slows down to as slow as dial-up. It sucks!

Living way out in the sticks I have been with Hughes Net for just over a year now. I can only say that it is expensive at 70 dollars a month for limited monthly bites. I cannot afford to stream anything like movies etc. as they will put me over my plan allowance.

I do have fast and fairly good connections to the net but when bad weather hits and the dish gets snow covered I either go without internet or go out and clean the dish off. High on my garage!

I took for granted the years I had Charter cable services where my land line phone\TV\and internet together only ran me 90 dollars a month and had unlimited internet usage.

If you are paying 36 bucks a month for the LOUSY internet service..

Why complain?? You seem to be getting what you are paying for.
    =================

Frontier was forced out of a local area here.. The state gave them so long to improve their service or face some serious repercussions. Frontier sold out to another company.

I called my Frontier buddy, he is a linesman. Because I canceled my home phone Frontier automatically places your account on the lowest DSL settings, they did it again when activating my new modem. They lie out of their teeth about it but my buddy goes in and sets it back to where it is supposed to be. It still is slow for DSL but I am too afraid of satellite due to the poor record and complaints.

I'm enjoying Century Link, which is more reliable than Comcast cable internet. They should be going to Fiber Optic in my area in the next 5 years or so.

And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche

Hughes NET ROCKS out here! I mean REALLY rocks!!

I'm being totally serious too. They are great.

We had DSL before and it blows compared to satellite. We'd be lucky to get dialup speeds with our DSL. They kept saying there was nothing wrong, and I'd give them proof after proof of the speeds. They'd deny and deflect (ad nauseum). Finally told 'em to come get their crap and switched to Hughes Net. Best money I ever spent!

I read complaints about them all the time, but I don't get it. Ours is great. No complaints whatsoever. Customer service is great too, and they don't jack up our rates every month either.

We pay about $70/month for unlimited bandwidth. Can stream movies no problem...it's really good.

P.S. The Telco never did come pick up their junk off the porch, I wound up tossing it in the dumpster after about 4 calls to them.

P.S.S. Yes, you do have to clean snow off the dish though, and severe thunderstorms will affect it (but they affect any satellite comms).

I'll be checking this out, thanks!
