Obama give away Gitmo..

I've had this on my mind for the last couple of days for some reason. Does anyone think Obama might try to give Guantanamo back to the Cubans?? I can see him signing some kind of presidential order and just telling the Marines to move. It may not be legal but that doesn't seem to matter anymore.

It is ours by treaty, in perpetuity. To return Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to Cuba, the Senate would have to void the old treaty and replace it with a new treaty acceptable to Cuba. Of course probably anything would be acceptable to Castro when compared with the original deal made back in 1903.

Like all treaties, the President is completely removed for the process...Don't lose any sleep over this one.

Like the Iran nuclear treaty currently being negotiated?

Or the treaty regarding Ukrainian sovereignty?

Not that I think he would do it....but declaring himself King of foreign policy is par for the course.

Or like the Treaty of Versailles which ended WWI and was negotiated by Woodrow Wilson, but was never was never ratified by the United States Senate. This resulted in our signing a separate peace treaty.

Here are the top ten treaties, some decades old, which still haven't been ratified. In nearly every case, this has been a very good thing.

As far as closing a military base, that would be in the hands of the Base Realignment and Closure Committee. This is a nine person panel who travel around, at taxpayers expense, looking over potential bases and military facilities to axe. They give the list of base closures to the President, who either signs it or rejects it. There is no line by line selection of bases, it is all or nothing. If the President rejects the list then it is back to square one. If he approves the closure list, it goes to the Congress and in one of the most gutless moves ever, all they can do is to reject it. The Congress doesn't have to approve the list and join in with the President. They can sit back, do nothing and blame the closure of Fort Courage and the resulting lost jobs in their districts on the President.

As CINC, the head socialist can order all military personnel out.

Mark Christian is correct. Only the Senate can change the treaty.

Mark is correct, sadly how things should work and how they do anymore are different.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

It may not happen, but you can bet that Obama would like to give it back. The Cubans are already demanding its return, most likely with his Administrations urging behind the scenes.

Without a lot of fan-fair, could the "Pretender and Thief" in the White House not simply order all military at the base transferred to
other duty stations leaving Guantanamo deserted allowing the Cubans total access to move in lock, stock and barrel with nobody there to say squat.

Then how come all those new anti-gun laws didn't get passed?

You know, the "Common Sense" ones he talked about after Sandy Hook?

Actually we took it off the Spanish so Cuba really has no say one way or another.

Exactly I was wondering the same thing. Could he order the Pentagon to close the base, leave the base and thus allow the Cubans to simply push the gate in and take it? At the speed Congress works he'd be long out of office and the damage would be done.
