No fix for 'Jesus rifles' deploying to Afghanistan

The code on an ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) made for the U.S. military by defense contractor Trijicon. The lettering at the end, JN8:12 refers to the Bible passage John 8:12.

When the so-called "Jesus rifle" came to light in Jan. 2010, it sparked constitutional and security concerns, and a maelstrom of media coverage. The Pentagon ordered the removal of the secret code referring to Bible passages that the manufacturer had inscribed on the scopes of the standard issue rifles carried by U.S. soldiers into battle in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nearly three years later - despite the military's assertion that is making "good progress" - the code remains on many rifles deploying to Afghanistan, which some soldiers argue is endangering their lives by reinforcing suspicions that the United States is waging a crusade against Muslims.

"I honestly believe that this is a dangerous situation. It literally could be a matter of life and death for a soldier if he fell into the wrong hands," said an Army officer who spoke to NBC News from Fort Hood, Texas. "The fact that combatant commanders are not following (rules set by Department of Defense) commanders is very disturbing to me."

The officer, who asked not to be named out of fear of reprisal from commanders, provided a photograph, taken on Tuesday, of the code on an M-4 rifle assigned to a soldier who is slated to deploy to Afghanistan in coming weeks.

The code stamped into the metal of the soldier's ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) ends with the model number with "JN8:12." which refers to the New Testament passage, John 8:12, which reads: "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

But quoting the koran would be just ducky?
The muzzies would hate an American with or without numbers and letters on their weapon.

Our ROEs would be comical if they weren't so dangerous to our troops.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Since this seems to be an Army problem, I have the solution; only issue them to the Marines! They aren't really concerned what the muslim world thinks!! JMO.[}:)][}:)][}:)]

Did anyone else know this was a problem until this article came out? I have never heard of this before.

    No fix they say?

There is nothing broke, so there is no need to fix anything.

It's their perception problem, not ours.

You know... those acogs work by collecting existing light to illuminate the reticle. Maybe that's the light the company is referring to... lol or maybe they just need to be shown the light of muzzle flash! Either way, if trijicon wants to put a bible verse on their sights, fine by me. My dog tags say Roman Catholic, so a hidden bible message is the least of my worries.

The scopes with the insription will be valued collector pieces in the future! In 1940 German army ordered the tri color decal on all German helmets removed. Most were some were not. The ones that were not removed are refered to as Double decals and command big bucks with collectors. If I had one I wax it over and apply paint.

There wouldn't be an issue if there wasn't an enemy with in. I am so tired of hearing from these "Private Mannings" that feel the need to subvert their own Military mission by sneaking info out to the media. These people are not serving a greater good, they are creating controversy for their own selfish agenda.

Some Private working an Afhgan Detention Denter is caught rubbing a Qaran on his nutz...its leaked to the media and causes a firestorm. IMO the leaker should receive a far more severe punishment then the stupid kid that did an impulsive act.
