Full story and picture: http://autos.yahoo.com/news/first-camaro-zl1-goes-for--250-000.html

The first Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 garnered a cool quarter-mil when it went across the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Las Vegas over the weekend.

The most powerful version of the Chevy muscle car ever built will reach showrooms early next year at a decidedly more affordable price - anticipated to be somewhere around $50,000. But the very collectible first retail Camaro ZL1, offered by a Sin City dealer, was aimed at raising money for the YMCA of Southern Nevada.

Curiously, it was another dealer who anted up the winning bid. Rick Hendricks, owner of Hendricks Motorsports and chairman of the Hendricks Automotive Group, took the gavel at $250,000. He'll have to pony up the money now though he'll only take delivery of his new Chevy Camaro ZL1 sometime during the first quarter of 2012.

The wait should be worth it considering the ZL1 Hendricks will get will be the only one produced with a Carbon Flash Metallic exterior. It will be the 69th ZL1 to roll off the line at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, in tribute to the legendary 1969 Camaro ZL1, of which only 69 were produced.

The ZL1 is the long-awaited Chevy response to the likes of the Mustang Shelby GT. The Camaro ZL1's 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 will make a jaw-dropping 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque. That is, incidentally, 24 hp more than the same LSA V-8 makes under the hood of the Cadillac CTS-V thanks to improvements made to the intake system, supercharger and intercooler.

The car Hendricks will drive home will come with a 6-speed manual gearbox, though the ZL1 will also be offered with a 6-speed automatic.

Select-Fire did not miss that car. Rick Hendrick purchased it. It was the only car to be made in Carbon Flash Metallic. Hendrick's has a massive Corvette collection of around 120. Pricing at dealerships will ba announced in Nov. on the ZL-1. No clue if they are making only 69 of them or not. BTW.. that 580hp is sweet but aftermarket folks have done way better than that.. Dale Earnhardt Intimidator's are 700hp and Nicki out of Chicago has made them upwards of 1000hp.

He bot one of the first 50 C5 Corvette's for his daughter in law when they rolled out.

Got to sit in it for a few minutes and drink a beer.

is the new ZL1 engine all aluminum like the original? because thats what really made that engine special...way over 500 HP and only weighs 500 lbs)
that article also said the camaro ZL1 came from Oshowa. The originals were all built in Norwood, Ohio.
I had a 69 camaro that was one serial number off from one of the ZL1's.;..
I have a friend who bought a new ZL1 in 1973 (4 years NOS)...it was almost 8 grand. it is worth half a million today.

It is still a hunk of Government Motors Stolen property and like the Cord and Studebaker, it should be out of business.

430 hp is the base in the current production. 3200 lbs curb weight.

ZR1 is 638 bhp, so in a word, "yes".

I thought if a car had more than 500 HP it wasn't street legal?

at 580 HP it would be difficult to park that sucker, I know that

not aware of an hp restriction on "street legal". But I'd be pissed if I spent $110K on a ZR1 to be told I couldn't drive it.[}:)][}:)]

figured as much, vette has to stay top gun.
back in 1987 the buick grand national embarrassed chevy in performance.
led to a much better vette.

5.0 Mustang had the same effect. It would walk a 'vette.
