GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Greenville police said a man died after a stolen marked patrol car crashed into a brick wall Thursday evening.
Officer Jonathan Bragg said an officer was responding to a crash near Cleveland Street and Pleasantburg Drive when a person involved in the incident jumped into the driver's seat of his patrol car and took off.
The car was spotted a short time later on Parkins Mill Road stopped behind another vehicle. Officers got out of the car and held the suspect at gunpoint, but police said the suspect ignored verbal commands to get out of the cruiser and fled.
Police said the vehicle then lost control and crashed into a brick wall on Verdae Boulevard.
The Greenville Police Department has the following policies included in their general order regarding departmental vehicles:
"2.1 Employees are responsible for departmental vehicles at all times; including security of the vehicle while unattended.
2.2 Employees are responsible for ensuring safe storage of departmental vehicles as well as ensuring unauthorized persons do not have access to the vehicle."
Coroner Parks Evans confirmed the driver died on the scene.
Evans identified the driver as 29-year-old Robert Timothy McAlister of Greenville. McAlister was not seat belted at the time of the crash.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday to determine cause and manner of death.
"As in any case, there is will an internal review of the pursuit and policies associated with this incident to make sure that they are in the best interest of our employees as well as the members of the public," the police department said in a press release.
The fatal crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

I am not a coroner but I would figure getting smashed together like making taters would be sufficient, along with the sudden stop. Speed could be the cause but maybe the Officer put a few .40s in his cruiser to help this poor guy out.
Glad the dummy died before he could hurt anyone else.
he was THIS CLOSE to making a full getaway
A few more inches and he could have said "missed it by this much"
