3% Fee for purchase .. CC

edited March 2015 in General Discussion
Just bought a 25 dollar item. 3% CC charge is .75 cents. Easier to pay the .75 cents extra instead of paying for and mailing a USPS money order 2000 miles and paying for the postage with a chance the USPS loses it getting there.

Does your food store charge you 3% more on that package of steaks

The food store does it the easy way. They charge you 3% more whether you use a CC or not. It's built-in to the price. You're paying for using the card, might as well use it.
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.

Spot on JamesRK!.....whereas on Gun Broker you agreed to pay more than the guy you outbid....and choosing to pay by credit card should be something that does not cost the seller anything since you DO have the option to pay other ways that do not charge fees.

People that whine about sellers charging the fee in comparison to places that don't seem to have trouble figuring out that if they don't offer the "discount" or however they word it that the price is built in and are paying the fee no matter what method of payment they choose.

Whenever I pay the government online with a credit card they charge me a convenience fee for using a credit card.

Personally I think it is bad marketing. Don't charge me extra for a cc, give me a discount for other methods.

Encourage sellers to accept Dwolla. Their cost to accept payments is FREE for charges under $10 and 25 cents for anything over. We recently added the ability for sellers to pay us by Dwolla and if that goes well we will add it to checkout. There were several other similar providers but at the end of the day they turned out to be scared of guns.....

(Here's a hint sellers. Our rates will be going up at some point in the not too distant future since they have been the same since we started in 1999. Sellers that choose to pay us via ACH, Check or Dwolla will get to keep the existing rate structure..... )

Yes, but if I mail them a check for my tag, I still get hit with a fee for mailing my tag. Georgia has us bent over. Luckily there is a tag office near me that rarely has a line and BONUS there is a waffle house right next door. I can go do my tag business there, pay cash and not get stiffed with extra fees and then have some breakfast afterward with the money I saved. [:)]

I live out in the middle of the boonies, and don't get out all that much. Please explain what a Dwolla is.

    +3% {[;)]}

In my auto parts/speed shop of many years ago, I loved it when a big
buyer asked, "any discount for cash?"

SURE!!! I was glad to give give 2 or even 5% off on big sales.

I typically avoid sellers that have the bogus 3% upcharge. However if they have it, and have the item I want then I will typically do a certified check or MO. I get great deals on fleabay and sellers don't charge an upcharge to cover the paypal fees, yet their prices are still way cheaper than a retail purchase for the same new product.

I love the sellers that have a competitively cheaper price, free shipping, and no credit card upcharge...interestingly many of those are the top sellers on GB [8D]

Our pricing reflects a 3% discount for check or money order payments. No other form of payment qualifies for this discount and the 3% will be added to any amount paid via any other method.

So one is paying normal price for an item. Money orders cost 1 something at the post office, plus what ever a stamp cost now, the envelope, trip to the post office and the chance. Chance the seller doesn't get the m/o.

Recently I found a Kimber listed by a local dealer, with the CC adds 3% tag line. Well, it didn't sell so I went to his store and saw it sitting in the display case. Not only did I save the 3% when I used my CC in store, but I also got it for $50 less than what his reserve was on the auction.

When I buy a gun I like to get the money in the hands of the shipping person as fast as I can, I know my FFL will be there the same day. If I can pay by CC or use GB checkout I much prefer that over going to buy a money order and having to wait until it reaches the seller.

As long as the 3% fee is posted on the auction I have no problem with it but I can tell sellers that the ones who post NO CREDIT CARD FEE get more of my business.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

As a buyer I always use a credit card to pay for GB purchases, unless it's something minor like brass, etc. While I try to find sellers who don't apply a surcharge, I'll pay it if other factors (price, shipping) make it worthwhile, or if it's the only item available at the time. I've never had a problem on GB (knock wood) but I do like the extra "insurance" using a cc offers on major purchases.

    Spot on!
Dwolla is the way to go. Most people have never heard of it. It is a great way to do ecommerce.

What is going on in GA. Did they pull a California and pass some kind of new odious tax law?

I do too, but I definitely look for No CC fee dealers first...it cost me $8.00(MO and postage) to mail out a USPS money order certified mail so I can keep track of it. That is half what the 3% upcharge CC fee would have cost on my current purchase.
