It feels good to have my own computer again to get on the net and play around. My old Compaq took a dump and I got tired or trying to fix it, was a good one but it is headed to the target range for a final blow. Now my wifes virus infected play computer that I almost refuse to touch is back to her and see can play all the free internet games she wants and get all the viruses that come with it.
It feels good to be free.

i often read about people on here buying a new computer and junking the old one.

have any of you thought about the gold that is used onthe contacts inside computers? you should be collecting all the free computers you can get...strip them, keep the parts with the gold and when you have enough, melt them down and if you know where you can get some flux and a cast iron dolly you could make some serious cash...i helped someone here do it(i got him the flux and the dolly and showed him how to use it) ...he got about 6 ounces of 99.99% pure gold out of it...and it only cost him his time and some gas for his burner....and he didn`t have to pay tax on it either when he sold it.from memory he sold it to a jewler.

We here in Oregon have places we can turn in these used computers. They used them for Charity after working on them and combining parts from several to make one.

Would need to make sure the Hard drive is wiped clean.

dan kelly, can you tell me what components to save and how to melt the gold out. I have acess to several old computers and moniters, and have thought about gathering them up and doing that, but don't know anything about it. If you would send me an email on it.

There is NOT six ounces of gold in a computer. That would mean computers would have $4-5k JUST in gold in them. Not to mention the component costs.

mercury...no no no!!read what i said...computerS...he got a heap of them...a shed full...he collected them for about 3 years every now and then he would strip them down and got rid of the parts he didnt want and keep the pieces that were coated with gold.it half a day to melt the gold off them and then scrape the rubbish off the top and let the flux get the last of the impurities out...but as i said, it was worth it..when he told me what he was collecting all the old computers for i didn`t know if he was joking or not...until then i didn`t know there was gold in computers.

Just do an ebay search for scrape gold.

Nearly all of the plugs on/in circuit boards have gold plated terminals along with the contacts where they plug into.

Also the circuit boards themselves, the small yellow ribbons that tie everything together are mostly made of gold.

Worked in a fabrication shop in NC that made racks for the plating industry. We made racks that held everything from eye glasses to auto body parts. The circuit board and eye ware racks that we made would sometimes come back to be rebuilt. The insulation on the contacts would sometimes be worn and have gold build up on them. It was never something that we at the time thought was worth saving. I believe that in a year I could have gotten five or six onces of gold from them. I would hate now to guess at how many pounds gold that had been swept up and thrown in the trash over the years from that place.

20/20 just did a show on how toxic it is to harvest the precious metals from a scrap computer. Hong Kong has poisoned air, water and VERY sick people because of this....its NOT worth it.

Scrap it all out to a charitable org. that will use the parts. Don't worry over the $10 you MAY get after hours of work and poisoning yourself. Plus....selling gold will aggrivate the crap out of you. Even if you do know what its worth....trying to get that for it is not easy.

in hong kong they might use acid and or cyanide to "melt" the gold off....and then collect the gold with mercury...not a smart thing to do unless you are in the middle of no where with a nice breeze blowing the fumes away form you...[B)]
