Winchester has the feel, but IMHO the Marlin is a more practical gun because its easy to mount a scope. I know they look better without a scope but my old eyes leave me no choice.If you do buy a Marlin look for a pre crossbolt safety model.

I have one of those late model '94's, that was tortured into accepting a scope. I have a cheap Tasco 3-9x32 on it, with see through rings. Open sights are dead on at 50yds, and the scope at 100yds.

It really knocks a deer off it's 'feet', (deer don't have feet, I know).

So why the sudden urge to get a thirty thirty?

I sold the Winchester 94, and kept the Marlin 336 pre safety 30/30 Model 336,( No suffix letters ) I believe the first marlin 30/30 with the round bolt....much better gun than the winchester..

I'd buy a pre-64 Winchester in 98% plus condition. One I bought for $350.00 in about 2003 that has a slight rub to the left upper edge of the forearm wood is now worth $800.00 to a $1000.00. You don't get that kind of resale value in a Marlin. Give it another five years and this same piece will be $1500.00...easy.

I can't seem to ever hang on to a 30-30.

I've only owned a hand full over the years and they always get sold off for need of cash or stolen(in one case).

Maybe some day I'll have another that I might can hang onto.

It isnt about the price. I have guns worth 100 times what they were new, some dont even work, just because the price is high doesnt mean they are any better., I wouldnt pay a 1000 bucks for any winchester model 94.. Just like Browning A-5s in sweet sixteen. dont want one and wouldnt pay what they are bringing just to have one..
