I am trying to find some info on this old 12 guage my grandpa had. It says Essex gun works on the side. The top of the barrel says 12GA.choke, serial number is A501396. Any info or direction would be great!!!

Thanks,
Chris

Essex - made for Belknap Hdw. Co. of Louisville, KY by Cresent. Value depends upon several factors, condition formost, whether hammered or hammerless. A hammerless in fine condition might go as high as $200-$250, more usually they go for $50-$100, and mostly as wall hangers in any case. These were utilitarian shot guns built under more than 150 names by Cresent and sold through Wards, Sears and a bewildering number of hardware and dry goods stores, mostly in the $10 to $12 range. While we would love to believe old is valuable, there is little collector interest in thsse, there are a lot of them around (we average a question a week here), and the market is mostly driven by their use as wall hangers.

On the other hand, yours is a family heirloom, treasure it!

That is the answer I am looking for. I wanted its history, and dont really care about value. Thanks so much for you time.
