Paradise, Denver or Prine?

Seems like every once in a while folks get off on a music tangent, so I thought I'd run this one by y'all.
The song, "Paradise" (Muhlenberg County),
Who wrote it, John Denver or John Prine?
I've searched and found the lyrics under both, but nothing definitive about who wrote it.
Thanks,
Rob

John Prine wrote it for his father. Don't remember where I read it.

John Denver also did a delightful job on John Prine's "Spanish Pipe Dream."

When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn.

    Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Airdrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.

    Repeat Chorus:

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.

    Repeat Chorus:

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am.

    Repeat Chorus:

If you have never heard John Prine, give him a listen. Pretty sure you'll like it.

I was just listening to "Your Flag Decal
Won't Get You Into Heaven" yesterday.

    Thanks All,
I've got some Prine, but will have to dig up some of his earlier stuff.
I've heard of, but haven't heard, Flag Decale.
    Happy Holidays,
    Rob

I have liked John Prine since the early 70s.I think my favorite by him is "Hello In There",but there are so many good songs I guess it depends on the mood I'm in.[:)]

Prine is awesome, got a chance to watch him perform at Bass Hall in Fort Worth a couple of years ago. A really good version of Paradise is on his LIVE album from about 87. He sings it with Steve Goodman. Also, a great version of Angel From Montgomery with Bonnie Raitt.
