How hot did it get?

How hot would a floorplate on an old Model 70 have to get to bend like this? No signs that it was bent into that shape by force.

I'm still undecided whether or not to even attempt restoring this old rifle. Mainspring looks like it's okay, but the trigger spring appears to be collapsed.

When my house burned I had a 7mm mauser that got hot enough to let the sights fall of, but all the spings still worked okay. Never used the gun for anything but parts due to real bad pitting from being in the ashes for 4-5 days before it was found.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

If that's heat damage... I'd be very wary of any of the heat treated parts...
Including ALL springs, receiver, barrel, fire control components... Well EVERYTHING. [}:)]

Same here. The action and bolt cleaned up pretty nice actually. The barrel, externally, is fine, but the bore is junk, unfortunately. I just wish there was someone locally I could take it to to have the hardness of everything tested. I'd love nothing more than to put it back into use again. A pre-'64 .30-06 is as classic as a rifle gets.
