History Question - "Extreme" sports

So, there I was, watching a show on American flat tracking (motorcycle) when the commentator said 'Flat tracking is America's first 'extreme' sport'. I instantly thought 'I'd bet Rodeo is/was America's first extreme sport (pre-dating FT by a 100 years or so).

Bronc bustin probably is what got Rodeo started (that and strong drink)

I've thought about it a bit more and now think that Fencing or Dueling were the first 'extreme' sports (bare knuckle boxing? 'Wrasslin' (Bear?))

Watching battles during the Civ ill War (The War of Northern Aggression) was an interesting 'spectator sport'.

One could suggest that Yacht racing (America's Cup anyone?) also pre-dates motorcycle racing.

What do you think?

Edited: America's first. A M E R I C A N. Not Roman, Not Egyptian, Not Chinese, Not Mongolian.

I'm wonderinng if John Colter's run would qualify?
Doubt he thought of it as "sport", but them war hoops probably did.

Yeah, having to fight of a starving lion or other men with nothing more than a sword for someone's entertainment is about as extreme as it gets....

Clearly you have never been to the red bull Rampage down in Virgin Utah... It's not uncommon for them to have to Life Flight several of the competitors out of there every year...

The answer is simple, Rodeo. The first organized Rodeo was in 1882, long before the Advent of motors...

And I'm sure if you want to get technical, Rodeo is a lot older than that. But there never was a circuit for Pro rodeo until 1882

I would bet that back in the day, the very first extreme sport was also the very first "Hold my beer" moment in history.[:D]

I can just see ole Davy Crocket grinning the bear to death![:0]

quote:Before lacrosse was a popular sport among prep schools in the mid-Atlantic and northeast United States, Native Americans throughout North America played an ancient version of the game that traces back as far as 2,500 years ago. Back then, lacrosse wasn't played for fun, but rather was part of a religious ritual simulating war. The goal wasn't to have fun, but rather honor their gods and toughen up the young warriors. Games could go on for days and might include hundreds of players on each side. Their version of the game didn't include pads and helmets. In fact, the earliest players didn't have any protection at all. Rather than carrying metal or graphite sticks with nets, their ornately decorated sticks were made out of wood and possibly deer skin.

    You wouldn't consider this 'extreme'?
And yes, that's me, 40 years ago before my brain outweighed my testicles!

    Where was that?

That was in Pendleton, OR. Not at the Roundup grounds, but at a smaller arena they had.
That was my third time on a bull and my first qualifying ride. I scored an 87 and remember it like it was yesterday. I'd been on the same bull the weekend before and almost made the buzzer. I don't know if it was dumb luck that I drew the same bull or if there was a little behind the scenes work done to get me on him again. His name was 'Blue Boy' and he could twist and spin with the best of 'em!

Extreme, but not a sport. A competition for a skill needed for breaking horses.

I see a buttload of liberal commentary.

Are you both so illiterate you can't formulate a question?[:X] Help me understand why you post this drivel.

Back when it first started, it had to have been an impressive sight, and the extreme name probably came from the speed, noise, wrecks, and overall experience, especially from the perspective of the riders. It was something new and exciting. When trains first became a mode of transportation, I expect a lot of people thought it was "extreme" to not have to walk or ride a horse to a destination.
