Never bothered with sharpening blades before. Is the bolt holding the blade to the motor shaft "lefty loosey" or "lefty tighty"??

Almost all lawnmowers have right-handed Blade studs. But remember I said almost all, there are a few brands that have left-handed studs

If you call a lawn mower repair mechanic, tell him your make and model, he will tell you if it's right-handed or left-handed

depends on the direction of the blades. you can look at the pitch of the blade to determine the direction of rotation.

The bolt would tighten in the opposite direction.

Unless the blade is mounted upside down, the cutting edge is the leading edge, which tells you that the mounting bolt must travel in the same direction to loosen. And yes, as has already been noted, remove spark plug wire first, securing it away from the plug, if you value your fingers.

The bolt tightens the same direction the blade turns. If you sharpen it don't forget to balance it after you sharpen it.

As air ratchet or impact will make it a lot easier to get that nut off too.

Have 2 sets for the Deere. Sharpen and change every spring. 1st cutting I use the previous season's blades, then change out.

    Is this sarcasm?

    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

I worked for a power equipment shop for several years. We sharpened blades. Labor cost on the mulching blades (Honda, for example) approached replacement costs. I sharpened mine at home, mostly with a file. Not related, but important to note, is that blades which are used a lot, even the thicker ones, will eventually be eroded by sand and dirt on the trailing edge, near the tip, at the curve where they bend up. These could fragment. At that point, we would not sharpen them.

Wear protective gloves. (ironclad, mechanix, etc.)

I lost half a fingernail (it grew back) when my block slipped out and the sharp (new) blade swung around.

I have never hurt so badly in my life.

One of these comes in real handy for balancing the blade. I use a bench grinder to sharpen my blades.
