California Online Ammunition Sales Spike Ahead Of Jan. 1 Law Change
KPIX 5) ? Ammunition sales across California are skyrocketing heading into the end of the year, but the deals have nothing to do with Christmas or holiday sales.
Direct-mail ammo sales are up 187 percent over last year, with some of the biggest increases are in the Bay Area.
In Concord, sales have rocketed 968 percent. In Santa Clara, sales have spiked 315 percent.
California hunters and gun enthusiasts are stocking up on ammunition this holiday season with online sales.
Come January 1, ammo purchased online can?t be delivered to your doorstep. It will have to be shipped to a licensed dealer that has been approved by the Department of Justice.
But dealers are still waiting for the DOJ to release its exact guidelines on who can supply ammo.
?We are waiting for them to give us the when, where and how,? said Kevin Yost, manager of Guns, Fishing and Other Things. ?It?s a big unknown circle right now that we would love to have the answer to and hope to get it really soon.?
Smaller mom-and-pop retailers may stop selling ammunition altogether because of the process of getting DOJ consent.
?It?s not an attempt to prevent law-abiding citizens from purchasing ammunition,? said Griffin Dix, Co-Chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. ?But it is an attempt to make sure that the sales don?t go to criminals and other persons who are prohibited from buying ammunition.?
Startting July of 2019, California residents will need to have a background check prior to purchasing ammo.
With 2018 just a few weeks away, ammo retailers are trying to gear up for the new changes.
?Unfortunately we are still waiting for a lot of the clarity and the clarification coming down from the Department of Justice as to what these actual regulations are going to be, how they?re going to be enforced, and how they?re going to impact both the consumer and the retail store,? said Yost. ?Right now we just don?t know. So until that happens, we?re waiting just like everybody else is waiting.?
San Francisco already prohibits direct home delivery from online sales. So if you want to buy ammo come January 1st, you?ll have to find a gun store that has the DOJ licensing to be able to pick up your shipment.

The idiots that passed this gas thought it was a good idea; hope they stay where they are, we don't need no stinkin' background checks for reloading components.
Ironic that Frisco has such high numbers with that gun ban and all...
a $100 fee/tax per round would do the same thing, and be a lot easier to enforce, I would guess that won't be to far down the road. if they can mandate healthcare and call it a tax, why not some ridiculous tax on ammo.............[xx(][V][V]
The DEMOCRAT party plan has always been heavy taxation as a back door method to get guns away from people.
MRS Bill Clinton proposed raising the costs of FFL renewals into the thousands. Her purpose was to take out most of the dealers.
DEMOCRATs in the New England area proposed taxation on ammo and gun sales upward towards 500%, an excise tax on all gun sales, background checks on all ammo sales. This was after Clinton won in 1992 and DEMS controlled both houses. The mid term election of 94 ended the DEMOCRATs plan.
After the Obama election there was a myriad of gun control legislation proposed after the DEMOCRATs victory but their priority was the porkulous bill and the ACA. The midterm election ended DEMOCRAT control of congress and further efforts became futile.
DEMOCRATs today still propose legislation to tax away your Second Amendment rights which the GOP majority kills.
California is a DEMOCRAT supermajority state. With DEMOCRATS in total control, the future for gun owners is bleak and will only get worse.
