Great weekend hunting

Went to TN for opening weekend Friday evening. Son and I hunted hard till lunch Saturday, saw plenty of deer, but the only one worth shooting dad missed. [:I] Went back out Saturday evening and again saw lots of deer, mostly young 'uns and does. Were hunting a field about 800 yards long and 40 yards across. Had backed up just inside the woods and smoothed out a place to make a homemade ground blind and were watching a particularly busy crossing. The deer we saw that were worth shooting were always running wide open across the field at the crossing and just couldn't get a clean shot. About 4:45, son saw 3 big does come out to feed a LONG way down the field, up on a little rise. He asked if I thought he could hit one if he shot at it. I chuckled and said I doubted it. We watched them for about 5 minutes and he asked if he could try. Now, he is a very good shot, but I still didn't think he could do it, but as it was fast getting dark I said to go ahead and try. He stood up, braced against a tree, and fired off a round from his 7-08. One of the deer jumped straight up and I thought jumped back into the woods. It was standing in front of a big cedar tree, so we had a good point of reference to walk to. Walked up there and low and behold, the deer was laying there stone cold dead shot through both lungs! Went back Sunday with a laser and from the tree he shot from to the gut pile was 317 yards!!! Kid is a better shot than I thought!

Last night, sitting in the same spot, just inside the woods, we had a little 4 pointer literally walk right up on us. Son was sitting on the ground, and he shot the little guy at 15 feet! Deer never raised his head off the ground and would have run right over the top of us if Brandon hadn't shot.

I love taking kids hunting! Nothing beats it! This weekend my sister will be down from St. Louis with my nephew and hopefully, we can get him his first deer.
