Outboards..

I have a Johnson 9.5HP 1972 model. It runs great when in a barrel forward, neutral, and reverse but when it is in the river it runs good in neutral and good in reverse but in forward gear it runs terrible. It is very weird. Any ideas?

Mount it too the front of the boat facing backwards

Change the plugs ----
if that does no help check the spark

Use the barrel instead of the boat.

Just a wild guess here but, check how deep the motor is in the water when it's in the barrel compared to on the boat. Make sure the exhaust ports aren't underwater.

exhaust ports are supposed to be underwater. That type exhausts through the prop. I had a similiar deal and after testing cylinder pressure I found it to be low. Ran fine unless under load. A re ring and she purred like a kitten.
