Unassisted triple play

has anyone ever seen one?

I was watching Lennie Dykstra of the Phillies years ago playing second base. There was a runner on 1st and 2nd and no outs. The batter hit line drive to Lenny, who jumped and made an amazing catch. He tagged the runner coming from 1st to 2nd and needed to just touch the 2nd base for the 3rd out, which he easily could have done being just 3 steps away and the 2nd base runner was almost to 3rd, but chose to throw it to the shortstop instead. Very close to an unassisted triple play. Wow!

There have been 14 unassisted triple plays in modern baseball and they have nearly always happened like Dykstra could have. A liner to SS or 2nd, a tag between one and two, and a touch of the bag. There were two however made by 1st basemen in the twenties. Sorry, I have a baseball almanac in my office and I have been coaching for 17 years. The great game.
