When i went on Dec 12th to get my left knee replaced there was an older black man there wearing a Army Ranger and Vietnam ball cap.
We got to talking and everyone in his family is gone. He is the last of his family.
This is the second time in my surgeries that i know of that a vet was going through surgeries with no one there or anyone who cares for him.
To me that should never happen. It would be nice if there was some way that another vet could come and talk to him and hang out for the surgery and visit him at home some.
Everybody needs someone sometimes.
Is this a good idea or bad?

Then, of course, there is the charity overload situation. There are so many with great causes that it's already overwhelming on deciding which ones to donate to. I think what you suggest is a great cause, but if I have to chose between donating to a charity that provides treatment for sick children (e.g. St. Jude's) or a charity that provides companions for a sick person, I'd chose the first one hands down.
The veteran organizations would each take a ward and visit with the veterans...They would keep them company. provide reading material and other activities.
They would also help clean the vets up...my grandfather was a patient, who had been gassed in WWI...I remember my dad shaving him and several other men.
My old man was a thirty three year old Marine veteran of the Pacific and Korea..Vets taking care of vets...probably been going on since the GAR ...
If it's not happening in your area, go talk to the VFW's. They would be the ones that would be happy to organize it
