We use Black as a descriptor. Someone will be offended either way, so I don't bother worrying about it.

I know that I am not supposed to call them what so many call each other so often. For some reason it is bad when a different race uses the same term.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

This is so true, I have never had anyone call me the white Dave. When working we had a problem we had 3 guys with the same name, rather than refer to the race (each different) we went with tall short and skinny.

Similarly I spoke with a black co-worker on this subject and he said "don't call me African American, I'm not from Africa and I've never even been there!" LOL

I referred to a coworker ones as black... He told me he's not black he's dark brown... After that I called him Turd, I told him dark brown is color of my turds when I go to the bathroom. I also told him If you're not gonna let me find a proper name for people of African background, I'll call you what I want... He wasn't happy he opened his mouth, and the nickname stuck.... Of course I never called, nor would call any other black person Turd, unless of course they give me the same crap
