UHT milk campers / Preppers

UHT stands for ultra high temperature pasteurization. It's a process of pasteurization they use to make shelf-stable milk. This self stable milk has a shelf life of 6 to 9 months without Refrigeration. But has to be refrigerated upon opening.

It comes in whole milk, 2% milk, 1% milk and skim milk. Plus it comes in flavored milk such as cookies and cream, chocolate, strawberry Etc. So it does offer whatever anybody wants

This milk is great for people such as I that that always throw about a half gallon of milk away if he buys a gallon before it goes bad, but it excels for camping because you do not have to refrigerate it until you open it. So if you go through a few gallons of milk on a camping trip, you only need to keep refrigerated what you're going to use immediately.

This type of milk is also great for Preppers as long as you rotate your stock before they expire. Which is easy to do because they do have a 9 months shelf life.

As far as taste, I have never found anybody that can tell the difference between UTH milk and regular milk, including in a side-by-side comparison. if you do not refrigerate UTH milk before you use it, it just tastes like warm milk. But if you refrigerate it, it tastes just like cold milk.

As far as nutritional value, they're both the same except that you would have to drink one and a half pints of UTH milk to get the same iodine you would in one pint of regular milk. Otherwise nutritionally speaking they're the the same.

The cost of it is cost-prohibitive in my opinion at $10.60 a quart. BUT Dollar Tree sells them all the time for $1.00 a quart, and for the last two years that I've been buying the product, has never ran out.... Dollar Tree is a nationwide dollar store that operates in all 48 states so I'm sure you'll find one close enough to you. Although I don't know if all of them Carry this milk. But all the ones in my state that I've been at does. And my observation is that they do not sell outdated milk. Infact most of the ones I buy have the full nine months left before expiring

I didn't know it was even sold.

I drank plenty of it when I was in the Army and deployed. In Iraq we could get little boxes of it and would put them in coolers with ice in our HumVees.

    I liked the Strawberry flavor[:p]

I drink milk everyday if I have it, I like it and have always been a milk drinker. On the other hand I have NEVER seen my wife drink on drop of milk.

I will have to check out Dollar tree.

    Thanx

They keep it on the same aisle that they keep their cereal on... At least in Utah that's where they keep it. But I have never seen Dollar Tree stock the flavored milk. But I guess you can flavor it yourself either powdered flavoring or syrup

A couple of weeks, once opened it is just like regular milk...

The process that they used to make it is that they bring the milk up past a couple of hundred degrees for a few seconds bottle it and then flash cool it

So basically all they're doing is canning milk. And once opened it is just like regular milk accept the ultra high temperatures evaporates some of the iodine in the milk

The only drawback is that once opened you can't really tell when to use it by, by a date on the container. I just stick it to my nose before I use it if it's been sitting for a couple of weeks in the refrigerator. And if it smells good I use it just like I would with regular milk...

Again, it tastes just like regular milk cold when it's cold, and it tastes just like regular milk warm when it warm. So refrigerated before you use it, if you want it to taste like cold milk. and after it's mandatory to refrigerate it after you open it just like regular milk

I stopped buying a gal long ago Now half lasts me about a week so pick up Half gal once a weeks.

Sounds to me that once I opened a gal of this stuff by the time I used up half I may just be throwing away a half just like before.

    But now I use.

I just do not Digest Regular milk right any more. I use that or Goat Milk.

Gossner... They're a Utah/Idaho based company. But I know that Family Dollar ships things all over when they find a good deal on something.
