was picking up granddaughter at gradeschool the other day and noticed they had a small flag on about a 50ft pole. sitting there waiting and I remembered I had an old holiday flag in the basement I found when cleaning out a great aunts house. she had it in the basement wrappped in an old quilt. it has a few waterstains as I don't know how long it was in her basement.
I took it over to the school this morning and offered to give it to them. I told the lady it was a holiday flag, or thats what we called them, and she gave me a blank look. I told her it was very large, couldn't remember the specific size but had to be well over 10-15ft long. I never really had it spread out as I had no place to fly it, told her if it was to stained to let me know and I would take it to VFW and let them get rid of it.
I was suprised how grateful they were, she called a few of the other secretaries/teachers over and showed them. I just hated to see it sit on shelf if someone could use it. Hope they can

Are you sure it wasn't a flag given to your Aunt/family by the military in honor of a fallen loved one that was a soldier to lay on their casket?
Plus if a flag is soiled/stained, the VFW can and will clean them and get them back into commission again if you request it. There are only certain reasons why the flag needs to be disposed of...
My wife found, at Goodwill, one of the flags that are used to cover a coffin. It was folded into a tricorner, and in a commemorative poich. Someone must have been cleaning out and donated it.[xx(]
I flew it for about a year. The edges started to unravel, so i retired it and bought a new one.
pretty sure it wasn't a casket flag, as she was an old maid, and only child, her dad wasn't military. my mother was still alive when we found it and she gave it to me as there were no other relatives except my mom and her sisters. it was just going to sit in my basement and I would much rather see it flown than just lay around. If when they open it up it is water stained I will take it to VFW or local dry cleaner to see if I can get it cleaned for them to use. I think it is much bigger than a casket flag time will tell
You're a good man brother...
