Working Man's Friend on Belmont St. in Indy. Hands down the best in the area. A good friend and I had a used car lot a block north.
It's too late for me, save yourself.

When I eat out I look for stuff I don't cook and Hamburgers are not one of them. I cook a mean burger so I don't normally get one at a restaurant.

I look for stuff like Prime Rib and Roast beef or maybe chicken fried steak.

The small non franchise burger joints still exist.

Here is San Antonio over by Ft Sam and the Pearl is a little places called Sam's. Great burgers and live music on the weekends.

Up in Arkansas in my hometown area we have a place called CJs Butcher Boy that also makes great burgers.

Can be found, just have to keep an eye and ear out for them.

Vals in Castro Valley, CA - or maybe it's San Leandro, on the border I guess. Not only are the 1/2 lb and 1 lb burgers great but they have the best frappes. I guess out here they're called milk shakes. At about 48 oz and use top notch ice cream.

I am pretty sure I have gained 20 pounds because of all this food talk on the forum. Can't wear it off in a wheelchair either.

But keep it coming, I can always get a bigger wheelchair ![:D]

Yes sir,and sadly you're correct. Seen many close. They just can't afford to buy/serve the good stuff and compete with the franchises on price, they go under.

I have, and they closed their doors around here the closest one happens to be about a 20 mile drive, and sadly unless I'm in the area, I don't have the time to drive there and back

Used to be a place down in St Petersburg where the burgers were seasoned in such a manner that one didn't have to have anything else on it. Big as hell, shaped to fit on a hoagie roll and mouth watering. You didn't need mustard, catsup, pickles, onions, tomatoes, cheese or anything else they were simply that good.

West of Richmond VA, place called Satterwhite's had the Mammoth Burger. One pound- looked like a meatloaf on a bun. Was run by my late Aunt Julia.

Lakeside area of Richmond- Roy's Big Burger since 1960. Walk up to the window, order, walk away with your half pound burger. Voted Best in Richmond several times.

And now it is almost 3:30 in the morning, and I want a burger...??.

I have tasted the best burgers in my neck of the woods including a "Bar Burger" from "Little Bo's" called by the locals and "Little Bohemia" by all the visiting tourists.

I can also vouch for having eaten the WORST burger in my life from a place down state (Michigan) called "Peppy's"

They are no longer in business (Praise The Lord), but back in the early 80's I ordered one of their supposedly famous "Monster Burgers".
It was about a full pound of ground beef on a huge bun with all the standard fixings. It tasted pretty good but within an hour after consumption I was cursed with the worst case of Montezuma's Revenge I had ever endured!![xx(]

Was very sick with chills, queezy stomach, headache, and diareah for over 4 days!! It would be almost 10 years before I could even think about eating another hamburger!

Utah has lots of them. Some even serve elk burgers.

Here's a travel tip: For a great burger, check out the grill at a public golf course. Usually a bit higher-priced, but almost always a truly great burger. One example is the course in Wells, Nevada. Terrible little town with mostly "casino" food. But the golf course burger is excellent.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

You're right, Utah still has plenty of them around. Just not any close enough to me to go to...

By the way Rocky, what the heck were you doing in Wells Nevada... The only thing to do there is go to Donna's Ranch and the Hacienda...[:0][:0]

I went to Wells once with the Shrines for a little two-day trip in the middle of the week when I was recovering from my first knee operation, all the wifes had to go visit the two above mentioned places to see why all the men are attracted to them... Or at least so they said... And of course all the husbands had to go to make sure their wives were okay,[;)][;)][;)][;)]

I can just imagine what the owner and all the ladies that work there thought with a bus load of old men and women descending upon them. My wife and I were the only young couple in the crowd. I think we were 25 at the time. But the rest of them were all old retired men and women...[:0][:0]

While we were there the owner begged my wife to come work for them... My wife was knockout gorgeous blonde with hug DD sized breasts. She looked like Heather Locklear

Talk about a bunch of washed up looking prostitutes. Of course I'm sure they were a lot better then a woman off the street that would open her legs for a little white powder

I had a transmission blow up while returning from the Big Reno Gun Show years ago. Got towed to the Ford dealership in Wells, where I was stuck for a week while they found the one and only five-speed manual left in the country. From Ohio.

I spent a lot of time walking around Wells. Walked to the golf course and rented clubs, then had one of those great burgers.

No, I did NOT go to the brothels. Couldn't afford the fee or the resulting alimony.

Or the resulting guilt for cheating on your wife. That would just kill me...

Someday I'll tell you about the time that I broke down 20 miles West of Wells.[V]had I not been inadvertently prepared, that would have been the last day of my life.
