Church: when did it all change?

About a year and a half ago, I started attending church regularly again after a 50+ year absence since my first wife died. It seems very few people dress for church anymore. Many men show up wearing the kind of clothes I wear to the barn! The jackets and ties are mostly worn by us geezers. People seem to get up and leave and then come back during the service; visit with each other during the sermon; entertain their kids with video games, etc. There seems to be no reverence. As a little kid, I wore the scratchy wool suit and was required to sit still (or else). That's all gone. So I tried going back to the old Lutheran church where I grew up, thinking there'd be tradition there. But it's the same there--the service was held in the gym because there was no AC in the church. I sat still and listened in that wool suit, as a little kid, in August heat. But no more.

You should try going to church at a nudist colony, everybody wears the same thing[:D]

But seriously though, it depends on where you go to church. Some Churches still show respect to God by getting dressed up...

Don't think Church changed but we as a people did. Know till I was 16 I went to church regularly Wed, Sunday Morning Sunday Evening. I was there when Church was not going on. Lots of Choir Practice.

Then all of a sudden I noticed that those folks were living two completely different lives. The one they show the church and the one they lived the rest of the time. If it did not benefit them they would not do anything.

Have not been back except for funerals.

Will say this Ran into a guy I worked with and knew he had just come from Church. He had on his best Sunday go to meeting cloths. Even had his Mustache and beard trimmed.

Just another symptom of what is ailing society. A lack of discipline and high expectation, parents are friends to their children instead of teachers/disciplinarians.

Medical waiting rooms even malls the dress has hit the toilet it is now the norm. Seems anything goes even smelling like a Billie Goat pissed on beard no matter the location. Seeing the public as it is It's no surprise it is also within the Churches

DEMOCRATs have weaponized main stream media, pop culture, Hollywood, most Colleges, academia and social media in an all out effort to end the influence of church and Christianity.

Irony lies in the fact these same DEMOCRATs have no problem accepting Islam and Sharia.

I don't care what they wear; showing up, gathering in his name is good enough for my loving God.

Hmmmm....I wonder how many of the early Christian 1st century churches expected people to dress up for church.

Tradition is nice, but if your dressing nice when you go to church are you doing it to impress others or are you doing it to give glory to God?

Yep, that's always been my take as well. I'm not going to church to impress other people.

I do not own a suit. I do clean up and wear my "Sunday best" which is clean and could be newer jeans or nice comfortable slacks.

I try my best not to make judgements of other folks. We Christians are a highly targeted breed these days and finding people with the shared love of God and his Son are priceless!

I looked at her and said, most don't want to show off their bald heads or pink hair. just happened a young fellow with green hair sticking out of his cap had sat down beside us, I got the got to &$## look from him on the way out....[;)]

If someone has a nice suit of cloths where do they go that's more important to dress up for than church? I've always heard that God was present at church every Sunday so I always wear my best if I'm going to be in the same house with the creator of the universe.

I know if I were the main man I'd remember those that thought they had better places to be.

when I first met my wife her neighbor was a preacher this was almot 40 years ago (baptist )
he tried to get us to come to church ( I was forced to go as a kid and have never been back I really even as a kid got tired of hearing I was going to hell for anything and everything ) any way he told me dress how ever you like most dress very casual or relaxed , God does not care how you dress he just wants you to attend ,
I see some truth in that your not going to impress any one although a lot do , some out of respect I am sure as tradition but I also think it was also a way to get more people in the churches . come as you are same as the pope(s) have relaxed so many rules to regain ( income )

I remember the day when my mom would put on her makeup, fix her hair and put on a dress just to go grocery shopping...

Even doing housework she would wear a dress or wear dress slacks and a nice blouse.

Them were the good old days with people respected others...

in my area, the dress codes went down in the 70s, when overall church participation was down also. dress codes is vanity. vanity is a sin. the churches encouraged attendance no matter how you looked. hearing the message was the important thing, not how awful you looked in that polyester suit that just shouted ME ME ME.

We have a very diverse crowd that attends our worship services. Some dressed in their best outfits and others in shorts and a golf shirt....I don't believe God is hung up on our appearance as he is with our hearts and minds....

In my working days, I was expected to wear a coat and tie most days....I have enjoyed the freedom to dress casual on a Sunday and just relax , plug in and recharge at church..

Next time you go, change your focus, you may find you will enjoy it more when you listen with your heart and not get sidetracked with what you see with your eyes...

The death of Protestant churches go hand in hand with old people passing away and the baby-boomer generation having no children and becoming yuppies.

Of course, all the mega-churches and television evangelist raking in the money and buying jet planes and huge estates is another sign of how religion has become nothing but a business to shear the sheeple.

Most people follow the wolves in sheep clothing now. Group psychology is the key to manipulation of mankind in all things. The temple, the palace, and mercantilism with science are playing the game right now, among us.

I go in jeans and a polo shirt. The suited guys at church haven't complained so far as I know. The idea is to get as many souls saved as
possible, not have a fashion show. By the way, my pastor, Robert Fletcher, says everyone, bikers, drug addicts and hookers, among others, are welcome. It's his job to preach, it's up to Jesus to change them. If you're ever in Kingsport, come visit at Good Shepherd Baptist.

You see your heart is in the right place though, you are doing it to honor God....some folks do it simply to impress other people.

I don?t think the good Lord cares what we wear as long as it isn?t indecent, and we bother to get there in the first place.

Remember, a Church isn?t the building, it?s the family of God who gather to praise him. Church can be held outside in the pouring rain/snow, or in a barn with smelly animals, dress accordingly...[:)]
