Since you have alot of experience facing big bears, what is your preferred big bear medicine from both a longgun and handgun perspective? Also do you have a favorite commercial load for both?

Preferred handgun is a Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt loaded with Cast Performance 370 grain hard cast wide meplat bullet at about 1200 FPS. As far as a longgun, the last 2 years I have been carrying a Ruger 77 Hawkeye in 416 Ruger loaded with Hornady 400 grain DGX. Have not shot a bear with it yet but I do prefer the 416 caliber over the 37 or 35 calibers.

The Hawkeye in 416 came from the factory with a 20" barrel. I do prefer shorter barrels when using a cartridge with a high expansion ratio as you will not lose that many FPS with the shorter barrel. I like too be able to carry a rifle by the pistol grip and still not have the muzzle dragging on the ground.

Thanks, One last question. Is the grip on the Blackhawk a Bisley or standard, and is the sight fixed or adjustable?

Standard grip, barrel cut to 5" with adjustable sights.

That will work. Just load it with heavy for caliber hard cast bullets. 350-370 grains if you can find some. Either Beartooth Bullets or Cast Performance should have them. I use the 370 grain from Cast Performance because it has dual crimp groove and I cane seat it in the rear grovve in the 45 Colt case and get a little more velocity from it.
