Seller wants a money order

Asked for an item on anorther forum with a sales sub forum for wanted or selling.

20 dollar item seller asks me to send a money order. Am I really going to rip you off for 20 bucks? I take personal check when it's small beans. This guy would not take pay pal cause he's been ripped off before. I offered to add 4%. OK well I draw the line at sending cash. That is asking to be ripped off.

SO deal fell through. How petty.

Being 100% honest here, I can't say I blame the seller given the current way of things. It is an unfortunate ending, but if the seller wants a MO, then pay them with an MO or don't buy the item.

I am not siding with them, as I accept personal checks when I sell on other forums, but depending on the buyer, I may hold that check or just send item out right away, knowing that is "shouldn't" bounce. It just depends on if I have dealt with them before or have some feedback from other's who have dealt with them to go off of. Just my 2 cents.

For me to get a MO it costs the MO fee plus $5 or more to drive to the PO.
The advantage is that if you are cheated, there is the option of filing mail fraud charges through the postal inspectors. I would get concerned if a seller refused a MO because I figured they knew the possibilty of being charged in a scam.

if not using Paypal or a C/C I use a USPS money order, and ship it Priority Mail.

    Covers all the bases.

For a $20 item, it probably wouldn't be worth it, but on a gun purchase it certainly is the only way to go IMHO.

I sympathize...its $20...I'm not making a special trip to the Post Office or a Store to get a money order when i have a check I can mail you for such a small amount.

Demand a money order for 20 bucks?....... If you write a rubber check for 20 bucks you are stupid. The bank will skin you for 30 in fees and still clear the check to the payee. If the seller can't accept a personal check for 20 he is a paranoid, gas ain't free to go out and get one. I would have to drive 12 miles to get a MO it would cost more for the MO and the mileage than the item was worth....

I send personal checks for everything. Never had a person send it back. Sure I might wait a little longer but with a check in hand, they will cash it.

This is how it gets started.

The next thing you know, we have a new federal agency to oversee the interpersonal exchange of money. The government will be able to close the "cash payment" loophole, while offsetting budget increases with a tax on every transaction.

So, I'm keeping my mouth shut.

Use a Wal Mart MO. They are the cheapest. I usually have no problem with a PC if the item is under $100.

"Am I really gonna rip you off for $20?"

But you dont want to send cash because you dont want to get ripped off?

Its only $20? You expect him to take a chance you are unwilling to take for the same amount.

    Thats pretty funny.

My bank doesn't charge me for money orders. They charge for everything else though.... [xx(]

I've seen fake e-checks, bank wires, money orders, postal money orders, credit cards and cash. I suppose I should be cowering in a closet, but "they" still can trace my IP....

That was the whole point of my post. It was a 20 dollar item. Ya I'm just lurking on forums all day long just waiting for the chance to rip people off and for 20 bucks get thrown off a forum and have any reputation I might have there dragged through the mud.

Yep what I would do for 20 bucks. [V]

Wrong LOL If I send cash and he rips me off there is nothing to prove I sent it. I can't even b***ch ablout it on the forum. He could say I sent him a bad check and post proof.

I work nights so getting a money order is not as easy as someone hitting up the USPS after work and as the mod on this thread said they cost gas to go get and extra time.

Does your bank not charge you anything if you deposit a check and it bounces?

If I win something on GB I only pay with a USPS money order or a certified check from my bank if the person allows that. Certified checks are free at my credit union. I send my payments with a tracking number so I have to go to the post office anyways. Had too many instances on ebarf when a person would say ohhh I never received your money-ya rightttt.

I generally only accept USPS money orders for payment. If a person lived so far out that they could not get a USPS money order I would consider allowing a personal check as long as they asked me first, and understood the item would not be sent until the check cleared.

If an item were under $30 I would accept cash with the understanding the person should mail it to me with a signature required and a tracking number which would CYA both of us.

My old bank would charge me if I deposited a check into my account and it got returned as NSF. That was one of many things that caused me to switch to a local credit union.

They did not charge me if I got a fake check though, only if I got an NSF from someone.
