Not really sure what your trying to do but I will give you a little info. Is it going to be gravity feed??? If so, you need at least 3" pipes. If you are using, lets say 1" pipes, yes a circulator pump is needed. If you have electricity and can install a pump, it would be more efficient and beneficial cost wise, to take this route. I don't know what you are trying to heat and how far of a run it is. If you use 1" pipe and are trying to make it gravity fed, it won't work. The water will not move. Do you have a book that came with this equipment??? If for any reason, not matter pipe size, if you can install a pump, do so. As far as a mixing valve, again, if you run it wide open, how do you regulate the heat. The pipe would become very hot on a short run. Need way more info to get you the correct answers to what you are trying to do. I am no way an expert on these types of systems, but know the basics. Maybe Marc1303 can interject or Mike Whisky or Topdad. All these guys do more hot water system then I do. I have guys that work for me that know these systems inside and out, but I don't know them as well as others. Just being honest Roger. Oakie

    I have A Combo Wood/Coal/Oil Furnace
And A 45 Gal Electric Domestic Hot Water Heater

This Unit Called the HotRod Does 18 gallons Per Hour
I want to Pre Heat the Water before it Enters The Water Heater

Lines Going in and Out of Electric Hot Water Heater Are 1/2"

Don't Know The Size inlet & Outlet On the HotRod unit

This Unit Can Also be installed in the Plenum of the unit(furnace)
but is Also Designed to Take the High Heat Of the Inner Firebox

Worried About The Anode unit inside the Water heater itself
Have Heard About Damage Even From Solar Preheater Units As those Temps Easily Reach 180*
The Rest Of the Gang Are Welcome As Usual To Chime in
    Appreciate the Help

    From the Net
Hot Water Bill Savings Up to 95%, with the Hot Rod Solid Fuel Water Heater.
Hot Rod Solid Fuel Water Heater by Yukon Furnaces
The Hot Rod provides an effective way to route water through the firebox or in the warm air duct (plenum) of a wood-burning furnace or stove prior to entering the primary water. It allows you to use the energy from burning wood to preheat water, reducing the primary load on your water heater... and your heating bills. Made of high temperature, corrosion-resistant stainless steel, the compact Hot Rod can be inserted in areas of maximum heat through only one opening in the firebox.

Heats at a rate of 18 gallons per hour with an 80? F temperature rise.

Available in a 24" length. Can be installed by the handy homeowner or a heating contractor.
