it is reported that in the 1970's the current POPE Francis had weekly sessions with a psychotherapist for 6 months...and "she really helped me"...seems it would have saved some money and been kosher to have checked in with GOD...that's what the churh says for us to do, then passes the plate ...or maybe GOd was on vacation then....

Why do people collect things? I somewhat collect guns and chainsaws. As far as quantity goes I have several of each, but quality nothing great. I have my picks and types I like, usually what I can afford and is not to expensive to repair. Why I collect these I have not figured out yet. Is it something to do, to make money from, a hobby, for the hell of it, their pretty, I don't know yet.

Depends. Are you in it for yourself, or are you in it for society?

In my opinion, it's better to be great at something than to get by at many things.

That being said, a society needs both. You dont always need the best to get by. Sometimes, an ok job is all that's needed and going all the way and getting a master to do it is overkill.

    Depends on where you live/work.
Densely populated urban, or sparsely populated rural.
A master electrician could earn a comfortable living in say Kansas City. Ain't gonna' happen out in the middle of BF Nowhere.

    that's the most important question.
I learned enough of multiple trades to do basic construct/repairs. havoc, plumbing, electric, carpentry, welding etc.
30 years ago there were a bunch of us young families wanting home improvements.
we all learned each others trades while working on each others houses.
always had an expert to bail you out if you got in over your head.
now days, it costs me more to do the job than to hire an expert. [:(]

I've been a journeyman steel worker, a journeyman mason, and now I'm a journeyman electrician. Did electronics in the corps.

Figure it's about time to move on to something else, job's getting old.

Why limit yourself? Learn as many trades, "things" as possible & you will NEVER be w/o work unless you choose not to work.
Though being a true craftsman & not a jack leg can take years to learn.

I know several trades and could have, not now, made a living at several. Ive known lots of people who could make a living at 3-4 maybe 5 trades, which is almost unreal IF the work is top shelf, half *, yeah, no biggie, but to be REALLY REALLY good, is a feat!

I have a hillbillie buddy that can build you a house from the ground up...EVERYTHING.
The ONLY person Ive ever known that has that ability, and Ive known a LOT of trades people over the years.

Power tools or hand tools...handplanes, draw knife, hand saws, doesnt matter to him...French multi-pane windows with the different hand planes involved, no problem...he is old school as well as use any tool ever made, the guy is a trip!

He'll clear the land, shoot a grade, do any foundation you want, rough/finish plumbing, rough/finish electrical, frame/finish, drywall/TP&T, finish trim and hand build the cabinets, paint & ALL types tile/floor goods...I mean, the guy can do it all...and its all very high quality craftsmanship...his handy work is in high demand & can be found in LOTS of multi-million dollar homes, those people find someone like that, and they share him with their rich friends because they can depend on them & their work quality.

He is an amazing man, rare, and a very good human to boot, proud to call him friend.
He grew up in the hills of Arkansas, where he learned to cut trees...and do everything else... as good a pure woodsman & hunter you will find.

Garauntee his handy work wont be passed to his son, his son is the Dictionary definition of stupid to the bone, barely able to pull his own boots up...[;)]

Its best to be both if you can. Specialize in something...but even professionals need to have hobbies.

I was pretty good a dealing with committed Juvenile delinquent youth in a Youth development center. I done this for 28 years and most staff fell by the wayside pretty quick. Also as a hobby farmer (200 head cattle) for years there is very few things that I can't build or fix, but I still feel the right thing, it is better to be a master at and the heck with everything else.

Back in the early 80's I learned something working in the semi-conductor industry when most things were built in house.

My Idea was to work in every possible section of manufacturing that my brain could handle.

So in 20 some odd years at the Manufacturing plant I did-

    Stock room work
    Shipping work
    Mechanical Assembler work
    Robotic Assembler/Handler work
    Chemical and Gas plumbing work
Electrical Assembler work (That was not for me)
    Sheet metal work
    Light basic lathe/mill Machinist work
    Painter
    MiG/TiG welder

The best part, It kept me from getting laid off because I could be moved from Dept to Dept. . And also I could take the skills that I learned and apply it else where.

Looking back, I sometimes wish I would have logged my time and obtained an Electrical Liscense.

Electrical is the building trade I enjoy most.
