Looks like a magnesium explosion. If you add water to a magnesium fire you get a boom. Thats why the little white balls flying thru the air.
Thats how they are trained to fight fires. I have been to lots of car fires and they get up close every time.
Must be a regional thing, around here they stay back until they have to get right up on it in order to put out the last bits of the fire.
